Michael W. Snyder, 64, of Shavertown, passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Barbara (Zeiders) Snyder, who raised him and his four siblings in Tunkhannock. He graduated from Tunkhannock High School in 1978.
Michael was a talented chef and had a love for food and cooking that was enjoyed by the residents of the Back Mountain for many years, as he ran the kitchen at the Checkerboard Inn.
Family, fishing and football were his greatest passions. He spent most of his free time at the river in Wyalusing on his boat, catching muskies and relaxing in his camper. He loved watching his grandchildren grow, traveling, watching Raiders football, and trying new restaurants. The one thing he loved the most was his five grandchildren.
Michael was a lifelong member of the NRA, and a member of the Harveys Lake Yacht Club.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Snyder.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, the former Patricia Wadas; son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Tana Snyder; daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Ned Crossley; grandchildren: Esther, Vaida, Mabel, Wayne, and Louis; sisters, Kim Severcool and Cindy Clary; and brother, Jeffrey Snyder.
The family would like to thank the doctors and the staff of Geisinger Wyoming Valley for their care of Michael throughout his illness.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.

I´m in shock. My daughter just informed me that Mike had passed. He was a wonderful man, chef and friend. The last meal I had before I moved to Florida was with Mike at the Checkerboard. He catered my daughter´s wedding and was always on my mind. I am so so sorry for your loss and wish I could be there to say goodbye to my longtime friend. I will miss you so much!

Mike made the best apple crisp on the planet and on July 4th was the hit of the whole event at Crispell's. He was kind and generous. The Peterson Family will miss him. We send our love.
