Phyllis M. Bynon, 79, of Shickshinny, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, due to complications following surgery.
Born in Hanover Township, Phyllis was a daughter of the late John and Adele Cooper Shields. She was raised in Dallas Township and was a graduate of Dallas Township High School.
Phyllis devoted her life to raising her children and grandchildren. She was a caregiver to others, never wanting others to do without. Phyllis always found a way to help others, even though she had very little herself.
She had a way with words, and it is that gift that for years to come will bring a smile to those who loved and knew her.
In the words of her grandchildren: "It seems appropriate that she passed away on Valentine's Day. Growing up we never saw her negative, mean-spirited or rude. She was only kind and sweet, almost childlike. She thought everyone was good at heart."
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Curtis F. Bynon; brothers, John and Richard Shields; sisters, Geraldine Heishman and Rita Shupp; and her two favorite cats, Spooky and Peanut Butter.
Surviving are her children, Mark Bynon, Boynton Beach, Fla., Gail Looker and husband, Gary, McKeesrock, Pa., Todd Bynon and wife, Beth, Hunlock Creek, Mary Beth Ostoski, Carnegie, Pa., and Glen Bynon and wife, Terri, Dallas; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Rose Thomas, New Jersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown. The Rev. Ken Brown, pastor of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, Pikes Creek, will officiate. Interment will be made in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Friends may call Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, if desired, may be made to Slocum Chapel, 1024 Exeter Ave., Exeter, PA 18640.

Gail, Todd, Mary Beth & Glen,
So sorry for your loss. As kids growing up in Fernbrook, I recall your Mom as being a sweet, kind, loving soul. Although her life had never been easy, she possessed an inner strength that is seldom seen these days. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
