DALLAS — Richard Maslow of Dallas, Pa., and Naples, Fla., died peacefully on March 20, 2024, at his home in Naples.
Born March 11, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Louis and Francis Alter Maslow, Dick graduated from Scarsdale High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Cornell University in 1954, and an Master of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1963. He served two years in the U.S. Army, from which he was honorably discharged in 1956 with the rank of first lieutenant.
During a 40-year career at InterMetro Industries in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., which was founded by his father, Louis Maslow, Dick served as president, CEO and chairman of the board until he sold the company in 1994. He also served as chairman of the Wilkes-Barre advertising company, Maslow, Lumia, Bartorillo, Inc.
For many years, Dick served on professional, business and civic boards including Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Fund, First Eastern Bank, Wilkes College, First Heritage Bank, The Luzerne Foundation and Commonwealth Telephone Corporation.
In 1980, he was named a "Distinguished Pennsylvanian" by Governor Richard Thornburgh, and served on the Pennsylvanian Economic Development Partnership under Governor Robert Casey.
His professional service included director and president of the National Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers; following in his father's footsteps, he was the first second-generation NAFEM member to hold that prestigious position. He also served as a director of the National Institute for the Foodservice Industry, and held membership in Young President's Organization, Chief Executives' Organization and World Business Council.
Mr. Maslow was a significant collector of 20th century postwar art. The Maslow Art Collection has loaned important pieces to museum and gallery exhibitions across the country and is used by Pennsylvania colleges for teaching and research, particularly at Marywood University in Scranton.
A fine athlete and avid golfer, in his retirement Mr. Maslow founded and was president of Huntsville Golf Club, a Rees Jones designed course located in Lehman, Pa. He was also a member of Grey Oaks and Hideout Golf Clubs and Naples Yacht Club in Florida.
In retirement he also established the Maslow Family Foundation, which supports programs and organizations that seek to improve the lives of residents in the Wyoming Valley. Mr. Maslow was committed to supporting the arts, health care, education and children with special needs.
Dick is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Moore Maslow; and his son, Douglas Maslow, of Dallas. He is survived by his sister, Gyana Pendleton of Claremont, Calif.; daughters, Jennifer Maslow, of Oregon; Hilary Maslow, of Vermont; Melanie Maslow-Kern and her husband, Chip, of Dallas; Allison Maslow and her partner, Margie Bryant, of Shavertown; Leslie Maslow, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his beloved grandchildren, Eric Naud; Olivia Lumia; Louise Lumia and her husband, Devon Maddux; Malcolm and Duncan Lumia; and Percy, Temple and Rivers Holtzman; and his companion, Mimi Ostrander of Lake Forest, Ill. and Naples, Fla.
Funeral services will be held in Naples at the convenience of the family. A memorial celebration of his life will be held in Dallas at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the Back Mountain Food Pantry in Trucksville, Pa.; or the Circle Center for the Arts in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
