Scott Hine Obituary
LAFLIN — Scott Hine, 49, of Laflin, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, unexpectedly in his sleep. His wife is the former Joley Bernatovich; they just celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary.
Scott was born in Carbondale, on March 31, 1966, a son of Judy (Bruce) Hine, Mayfield, and the late Robert Hine.
He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin. He was a graduate of Lakeland High School, class of 1984, and graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a military policeman, worked for Ocean City, New Jersey, Police Department and Lackawanna County Sheriff Department. He retired from the Wilkes-Barre Police Department after 20 years of dedicated service.
He was a member of the police force emergency services unit and the PA Attorney General's Drug Task Force.
He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36, Mayfield Hose Company, the Knights of Columbus and Pine Valley Lodge, where he served as treasurer for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association.
He belonged to the Emerald Society and the VFW.
He loved Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football. He was a fan of westerns and Johnny Cash. He enjoyed hunting with his son and family at his cabin in Wayne County.
He was kind-hearted, extremely generous and loved by all that knew him.
He was a devoted husband and father, whose family always came first.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, A. J. Bernatovich.
Scott is also survived by a son, Matthew; and daughter, Courtney, both at home; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Suzanne, Olyphant, and Gregory and his wife, Melissa, Easton; his in-laws, Andrew Bernatovich and his wife, Roxine, Dickson City; nieces and nephews, Robert, Ashley, Lauren and Gregory; and aunts and uncles.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Ryczak-Harrison Funeral Home, 901 Lackawanna Ave., Mayfield, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish, Madison Avenue, Jermyn, to be celebrated by Rev. Shane Kirby, pastor. Interment in St. John's R.O. Cemetery, Mayfield. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ryczak-Harrison Funeral Home.

I first met Scott and his brothers on Gorham Avenue as fearless kids. Held by his wrist and ankle we'd spin in circles and they'd say "we're flying." Later, as a young college student, he tolds humurous tales when we had breaks. His opening day falling from his treestand story and breaking his arm had us in stitches. Especially when his dad thought he was kidding around. It was a honor to have known and met him and it was Scott being himself that made him a great man. Our thoughts and prayers are with all. Scott and I worked together for over 10 years on the WBPD. I found him to be an honest and trustworthy man who was also a wonderful husband and father. He told me often how much he loved his family. Scott will continue to live in the hearts of everyone who knew him. I will miss him greatly.

He was the most amazing human being. I have known him since my daughter went to Wilkes University. He helped us find her once when she was in the basement of the Wilkes University Library and we couldn't get her on the phone. Always willing to lend a hand. I just saw him 10 days ago when he came up to his hunting camp. I will miss him.
