Sheldon Owens Obituary

Sheldon J. (Satch) Owens Sr., 70, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2009, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Lisa Owens of Nanticoke, after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer that he fought with strength and dignity.
He was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Plymouth, a son of Arthur and Elizabeth Pugh Owens. He attended Wilkes-Barre city schools. Mr. Owens served with Army National Guard, Company D, of the 109th Field Artillery, Plymouth.
Sheldon was employed for many years in the local shoe industry, and he was later employed and retired from the John Heinz Institute in Wilkes-Barre Township.
Mr. Owens was a member of St. Aloysius Church in Wilkes-Barre. For many years he volunteered as Santa Claus for various organizations and schools, and he was active with the Heights Little League.
He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan. Sheldon loved to attend all of his grandson Brandon’s sporting events and he was his number one fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor M. Alessi Owens, in 2001; and by his daughters, Roseane Owens, in 1963, and Elizabeth, in 1988.
Surviving are children Arthur Owens and his wife, Lisa, Nanticoke; Matilda Lobban and her husband, Douglas, King of Prussia; Sheldon Owens Jr. and his wife, Janice, Kingston; grandson Brandon Owens; his dog and faithful companion, Bear; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Community Care for their professional and compassionate care of their father.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 in St. Aloysius Church, Barney and Division Streets, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call today, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made in Sheldon’s memory to honor of his daughters Roseane and Elizabeth to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD 20814.

Not sure what to say?

There's been no mistake

There once was a man
whom we all will recall,
in the spring and the summer.
All year long.

He was a friend and a father
to those that he knew.
our memories of him will stick
like glue.

There are so many people who
knew him so well. There will be
times when his words will
happily dwell.

He was the greatest.His family
and relatives will say.

The spirit of

SHELDON J. OWENS Sr.

Will make a brighter day.

We are always so happy.
Though sometimes blue.All
that he went through.

We knew HEAVEN was made

FOR YOU

Mattie this is to you and
