Thomas Joseph “Terry” Tereshinski Sr., 86, of Galesville, Md., died Thursday, January 24, 2008, in Annapolis, Md.
Born May 12, 1921, in Glen Lyon, he graduated from Newport Township High School, Wanamie, Class of 1944, and attended Dickinson Seminary, Williamsport, and Western Maryland College.
He was employed at Western Maryland College as the JV football coach from 1947 to 1948 and the Varsity baseball team from 1948 to 1949.
He was also employed as a teacher at Annapolis Junior High School from 1949 to 1961, taught science, social studies and history at Southern Junior-Senior High School from 1962 to 1977, and was head football coach from 1963 to 1973 and baseball coach in 1965. He retired from teaching in 1977.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater from 1943 to 1947, serving with the 70th Division of the 7th.
He was wounded on Jan. 11, 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge and spent 33 months in the hospital, receiving 25 operations, ending his sports career.
Numerous points of achievement include being named to the All-Scholastic football team in 1938, the Wyoming Valley All-Star football team in 1938, and All-Star baseball team in 1939; while at Western Maryland College he played two positions in football in 1941 and also played baseball as catcher in 1942 and 1943; was named to The Baltimore Sun’s All-Maryland baseball second team in 1942; received the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Touchdown Club in 1965, the Southern High School Bulldog Award in 1970 and 1971, the Teachers Association of AAC Certificate of Honorary Membership and Outstanding Service to Retired Teachers in 1993.
He also was awarded the Western Maryland College Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service to your Class and the Alumni Association, and was inducted into the Western Maryland College Hall of Fame for Athletic Achievements.
He was the chairman of the Touchdown Club of Southern Anne Arundel County, president of AAC Retired Teachers Association, served as association historian and president of West River Teachers Association, and was a volunteer coach for the Galesville Little League baseball and basketball teams from 1964 to 1969.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Peter, Raymond and Paul Tereshinski; sisters, Mae Korolus and Eleanor Broski.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Woodfield Tereshinski; son, Thomas J. Tereshinski, of Owings, Md.; brother, Joseph Tereshinski, of Bethesda, Md.; sister, Pauline Kashefski, of Nanticoke; one grandchild.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Galesville United Methodist Church, 4825 Church Road, Galesville, Md. Interment will be in Quaker Burial Ground, Galesville. Visitation will be on Monday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hardesty Funeral Home P.A., 905 Galesville Rd., Galesville, Md.
