Clarence Woods Obituary

On Friday, November 15, 2024, Clarence Robert Woods, loving husband and stepfather of two children, passed away at the age of 76.

Clarence was born on November 4, 1948, in Paris, Texas to Clarence Robert and Peggy (Rucker) Woods. He attended Northridge University and received his bachelor of computer science degree from Chapman College in Orange County, California, and worked as an Aeronatics Logistics Engineer in San Diego for General Dynamics, Convair and BAE Aerospace Systems. On August 17, 1991, he married Nina Alexis (Jefferson) Patterson. He was proudly the Stepfather to Patrick Patterson and Krystal (Cavataio) McHugh. He also was proudly the Grandfather to Nathan and Sarah Patterson and Collin Cavataio.

Clarence had a passion for the Lord and served, not only, as verger at both St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Pacific Beach and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego, but also on church vestries, as Junior Warden, and on various committees and ministries. He absolutely loved working in St. Tim's Community Garden where he tended the crops and fruit trees, harvested and delivered crops of tomatoes, cantaloupe, cucumbers and other grown fruits and vegetables to food banks, 4 Community Care and Feeding San Diego. Clarence enjoyed teaching others the joys of gardening. Over the years, he could be seen with his dogs, Ginger, Mack, Layla, and Jasper enjoying the peace and beauty of the garden.

He was also a music lover and loved to dance and actually met his wife while out dancing with friends. Clarence loved going to the theater and joyfully bought tickets annually to the Old Globe Shakespeare summer plays. He was known for his thoughtful and sometimes contrary wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.

Clarence was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Robert, and his mother, Peggy, his six siblings, Debra, Peggy, Greg, Paricia, Keith, and James. He is survived by his wife Nina, his two Stepchildren, Patrick and Krystal, his three Grandchildren, Nathan, Sarah, and Collin, and several nieces, and nephews in both his and Nina's families.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, San Diego at 1 o'clock p.m.

In lieu of flowers, since Clarence was so very involved with our church garden to request donations be made to the church garden account for purchase of a fruit tree and plaque in memory of Clarence. Questions should be directed to Skip Kirby at (858) 877-0553 or email him at [email protected].

Clarence added joy, humor, and faithful servanthood to my life and my husband's. We enjoyed attending the theater together and gratefully received bags of green tomatoes from the church garden because Clarence knew we liked fried green tomatoes. Our lives were blessed by his friendship and sharing in ministry.

Clarence was always so kind and friendly. One of my fondest memories was a conversation we had about Sacred Ground in the church sanctuary. He will be missed.

Clarence was always there to help with company activities such as the Holiday Bike Drive. A Fantastic Volunteer, mostly working behind-the-scenes to make a difference to others.
