John Shea Obituary
John Joseph Shea, 80, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2020, in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was a man who could only be described in one way: The Legend.
Born on September 16,1939, in San Diego, California, John grew up alongside his three brothers, Don,Tom, and Terry, and was lovingly raised by his parents, Maureen & Joseph Shea.If two qualities defined him most, they were his unwavering faith and his boundless compassion for others.
John attended St. Augustine High School, where his devotion to faith deepened and his calling to serve
others became clear. After graduating, he enlisted in the Coast Guard, proudly serving as a "Coastie" and
gaining experiences that shaped his strength, discipline, and humor-including learning just how cold the
Alaskan waters could be. After his service, John pursued higher education at San Diego State University,
ultimately earning a master's degree in counseling.
Alongside him in every season of life was Susan Shea, the love of his life. John adored Susan with a rare
and unwavering love, placing her on a pedestal and treasuring their marriage. Together they raised three
children-Joseph, Kevin, and Courtney-whom he loved with all his heart, serving as both a steady rock
and a gentle guide. In time, his heart grew even fuller when he became "Papa" to six grandchildren:
Kristina, Kira, Taylor, Trevor, Finley, and Kyan, Nothing brought him more joy than gathering with
family for meals, celebrations, or simply sharing laughter in the living room.
John devoted over three decades to teaching as a 5th-grade school teacher, leaving a lasting impression on
countless students. His patience, humor, and passion for teaching touched lives in immeasurable ways.
Even after retirement, he gave generously of his time. He enjoyed volunteering and giving back to his
community.
There are no finite words to capture what John was, the truest testament to his life was in the way he made
you feel. Like the most loved, valuable, and precious person in the world, always finding a way to shine
light on the qualities you were too humble to express. He had an impact on everyone he met-family,
friends, colleagues, and even strangers. His energy was contagious, his laughter infectious, and his
kindness everlasting. A proud Irish Catholic and devoted Notre Dame fan, John lived his faith openly,
attending Mass every Sunday and often reminding others, "If God can give me seven days, I can give him one hour."
Though he is no longer with us on this earth, John's spirit will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives
he touched. Today, five years after his passing, we honor John by carrying his spirit forward. In moments
of frustration in our daily lives, if we pause and ask ourselves, "What would John do?" -and follow his outlook, footsteps, and grace-the world would surely be brighter for us all.
