Burtt Lauck Obituary

Burtt William Lauck

Burtt William Lauck passed away due to complications of COVID-19 on November 30, 2020 at the age of 82.

Burtt was born in Waco, Texas on January 12, 1938 to Joe and Joyce Lauck. As the first born, he was the light of his parents' lives. He attended Alamo, Zundy and graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1956. It was during these years that his natural gift for playing football became apparent. As a 7th grader he was often mistaken for a high school boy because he was taller and bigger than other boys in his class. However, his most notable feature was not his size, but was the twinkle in his eyes. He was always ready with a quick joke or a sarcastic quip to make people laugh. Burtt was never one to boast, but one story that followed him was the honor of being named all state tackle in 1955 while on a team that did not advance to the playoffs.

After high school Burtt was heavily recruited to play football and over the next three years attended Baylor and West Point. He finally landed at the University of Texas where he met Emeline (Amy) Bruyere during his senior year. Their mutual love for a good game of bridge and each other led them to a lifetime commitment which began in the spring of 1961 when they were married. Burtt and Amy had two children: Burtt (Little Burtt) and Linda (Girl). Burtt graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Mathematics and later earned two Masters Degrees from MSU (one in Math the other in Education).

Burtt spent many years working for WFISD as a teacher and administrator. He was a math teacher/coach at Barwise Junior High School; a math teacher/coach at WFHS; a vice principal at WFHS and the principal of WFHS from 1979 - 1989. He then worked as the Director of Student Services at the Education Center before retiring in 1993. While retired Burtt enjoyed many rounds of golf, many hands of bridge, and many trips with Amy. .

Two of Burtt's greatest joys in life were his grandchildren (Kyle & Sydney Lauck) and his canine children (way too many to name). To his grandchildren he was PawPaw, and he was both blessed and proud to be part of their lives.

He was a big man with an even bigger personality. He made people laugh and feel comfortable no matter the situation. He filled up a room with his presence and was telling jokes to the nurses until the end.

Burtt is preceded in death by both of his parents.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Amy Lauck; children, Burtt Lauck and wife Jill and Linda Fain and husband Joey; grandchildren Kyle and Sydney Lauck; brother Ted Lauck; brother Joe Lauck (and wife Eileen) and too many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends to mention.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses in the Covid Unit at United Regional Hospital.

Due to the ongoing high number of Covid cases in this area, there will only be a small graveside service for close family at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in memory of Burtt Lauck to any of the following organizations: The Wichita Falls Humane Society, Interfaith Ministries, Presbyterian Manor (The Good Samaritan Fund) or Miss Fannie's Friends.

Burtt was a big, kind, lovable person at Wichita Falls High School. He had Principal Bill Jeter were an outstanding team of 'good people' with Peggy McKenzie and Paul Strong in the early and mid 70s. Just mentors and examples. Love to his son who I knew when he worked for Don Flatt in the university intramural office.

Burtt Lauck was my assistant football coach way back in '62-'63 at Barwise Junior High. His positive influence encouraged me to continue in football & strive to be a better student. Truly a great man & educator whom I have never forgotten. Coach was a difference maker.

Burtt Lauck was the best teacher I ever had. He convinced me that I could handle Algebra I. He worked with me and I did it! First (and on,y) teacher I ever had who was patient enough to work with me as a math-challenged student. In fact, he convinced me to take Algebra II at a time when it was not required. I will never forget his patience and that twinkle in his eye. When I became a teacher years later (reading — not math!) I consciously tried to emulate his positivity and kindness.

Burt was a mathematical genius. He was one of the very few to be encouraged to seek a doctorate in math by the MSU Math faculty!

Wow, COVID became even more tragic when it took the life of Burtt Lauck. I was a teacher at Old High in the early 80's and Burtt was my principal. He was involved in every level of that school - from the highest level of administration, to extra-curricular activities, to carrying a wheelchair student to a third floor class - before there was an elevator! Burtt's "Jokes of the Day" were infamous. A personal favorite: What did the duck say to the clerk when he bought chapstick? "Just put it on my bill." Burtt, I know you're getting a big welcome to Heaven's Math Department from Donna and Exie. Rest in laughter, Mr. Lauck! And GO COYOTES!

Coach Lauck was my Algebra II teacher at The High School in 68-69! What a fun man, one of my favorite teachers ever ( and I had few)! He made even Algebra fun! I remember his white shirt and dark pants everyday and always a smile and something fun to joke about! Sounds like he led a life “well-lived” and impacted many young people throughout his career! Condolences to all his family!

Coach Lauck was one of my all time favorite teachers - if not the favorite! I had him for algebra in the early 70’s at WFHS. I am so saddened to hear of his passing, but want the family to know that I am praying for your comfort, and that he was loved by me and other students that were blessed to have him as a teacher. I’m sad, but smile when I think of the happy memories of time spent in his classroom.

Mrs. Lauck, Burtt, Linda and your entire family. Please accept my sincerest sympathy at the loss of Mr. Lauck. Although it's been 25 or more years since I've seen any of you, this hits me hard as it feels like a part of my childhood is now gone. I wish you all the best and will keep you in my thoughts in the days and weeks to come. Warm Regards
