Charles Wright Obituary

Charles H. Wright, Sr.

Olney - Charles H. 'Pops' Wright, Sr., age 75, died Saturday, January 6, 2018 in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Olney with Rev. Steve Ulrey, officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodson Cemetery in Woodson, Texas with Barry Roberts, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.

Charles was born on November 10, 1942 in Paducah Texas in Cottle County to the late Buford Earl Wright, Sr. and Margaret Elinor (Ervin) Wright. He married Evelyn Ann Turner on December 22, 1962 in Rochester, Texas. He started his law enforcement career on October 1, 1964 as a deputy in Quanah, Texas. He served in Seymour, Baylor County from 1965 to 1966. He served in Snyder from 1967 to 1968 and also drove an ambulance with Odis Glasscock with the Snyder Ambulance Service. He served with the Midland Sheriff's Department from 1968 to 1970 and as a Brownfield Deputy from 1970 to 1973. Charles was Chief of Police in Seagraves, Texas from 1973 to 1975 and then served as Sheriff of the Hemphill County Sheriff's Department in Canadian, Texas from 1975 to 1984. He left law enforcement in 1985 to become the manager for his daughter's show, Sheila Helton Country Music Show. Charles was also the owner of Marly D. Hotshot and Hauling and Wright's Answering Service from 1981 to 1985. He moved to Olney and worked for the Olney Police Department from 2011 to 2017, and then worked for the Young County Sheriff's Office as jailer and transport officer from 2017 until present. Charles was a member of the Texas Sheriff's Association, the Blue Knight Riders Club and the Patriot Guard. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and served as Leader and District Leader in both Seagraves and Canadian. He was affectionately known as "Pawpaw" to his grandkids and great-grandkids, and thoroughly enjoyed their ballgames, rodeos and fun times with family

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ann Wright on August 22, 2006; one sister, one brother and one great-grandson.

Survivors include two daughters: Sheila Steward and husband Ray of McLean, Texas and Lorraine England and husband Curtis of Iowa Park, Texas; two sons: Charles H. Wright, Jr. of Olney, Texas and John Helton and wife Melissa of Mobeetie, Texas; one brother, Ronald Wright, Sr. of Seymour, Texas; one sister, Marilyn McGough of Seymour, Texas; three sisters-in-law: Linda Wright of Archer City, Texas, Maxine Ingle and husband Tommy of Beeville, Texas and Frankie Franklin and husband Ted of Slaton, Texas; three brothers-in-law, Buddy Lee of Abilene, Texas, Sam(Jr.) Turner and wife Shirlan of Granbury, Texas and Kenny Turner and wife Judy of Nashville, Tennessee; fourteen grandchildren; Marlana, Charly and Calvin Helton, Candice and Chandra Wright, Chasidy McCullough, Caleb and Cayleigh England, Christine Hyatt, Connie and Joey Day, Christy Blaylock, Clint and Amber Steward, Nikki and Mario Perez, Mitch and Amber Steward; twenty-seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be Friday, January 12, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lunn Funeral Home in Olney.
