C.M. McGlothlin Obituary

C.M. "Mac" McGlothlin
age 90, of Tuscarawas, passed away peacefully early Thursday afternoon, March 14, 2013, in the comfort of his son's home at New Philadelphia. Born at Sumner County, Tenn., Jan. 15, 1923, he was one of nine children born to the late Walter and Willie Ann Barnard McGlothlin. A veteran of World War II, Mac served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. During his tour of duty, he was wounded twice and met his future wife, Dorothy Clarke, an Army nurse who cared for him. The couple wed Dec. 29, 1945 and went on to observe 38 years of marriage before her death in 1984. Mac and Dorothy returned to the Tuscarawas Valley to be near to her family in 1951. He went to work for Joy Manufacturing in the engineering department and later became a routing engineer, retiring in 1985. Active in the community, Mac was a longtime member of the VFW at Tuscarawas, having served as post commander for several years. Mac exemplified patriotism in his community, having installed more than 100 flag poles in the span on just one year and always encouraged people to fly the flag. Always willing to serve as an educator on flag protocol, Mac took pride in carrying the flag during Memorial Day services. For the last five decades, Mac folded and presented the flag to countless family members during military funeral honors as part of the Tusky VFW's Military Funeral Detail. He'll be remembered as a strong, compassionate and generous father, grandfather, brother, and citizen. Always on the lookout to lend a hand to others in need, Mac gave away nearly everything he grew in his large garden from tomatoes, to peppers from which he made prized pepper butter, to thousands of canned pickles for family and friends alike. Mac was a familiar face at area garage sales, always on the lookout for a treasure he could share with someone else. An avid reader, he purchased and lent books with a circulation of friends and acquaintances that would rival a small public library. Despite his busy civic duties, Mac's family always came first. They will remember their father and grandfather as "Mr. Fix It," who would give the shirt off of his back. They guestimate that Mac bought and re-conditioned nearly 70 bicycles to give away to his family members, acquaintances and even strangers. In a rare moment of quiet time, Mac enjoyed playing golf and listening to a wide variety of music.
Mac will be sadly missed by his son, Russ (Debbie) McGlothlin of New Philadelphia and two grandchildren, Chad (Shannon) McGlothlin of Dover and Christin (Todd) Woods of Pleasant Hill, Ohio. Survivors also include his four great-grandsons, Ryan and Liam Woods and Colin and Devon McGlothlin; two sisters, Cora Lee Orvis of Franklin, Ky. and Sue Ann Russell of Nashville, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; and his loyal canine companion, Jake. In addition to his parents and wife, three sisters and three brothers precede Mac in death.
Friends are invited to call Sunday afternoon from 1-4 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating Mac's life Monday morning at 10 a.m. Those attending the service are encouraged to participate in a time of sharing stories and remembrances of Mac as we celebrate all of Mac's 90 years of enriching community life in our valley. Burial will follow in New Philadelphia's Evergreen Burial Park with military honors rendered by his comrades of the Tuscarawas VFW. Following the committal service, family and friends will gather for a luncheon in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home at New Philadelphia. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia ,OH 44663. Those unable to attend are invited to share memories and condolences with the family by visiting Mac's permanent memorial on the funeral home's website: www.geibcares.com.

I have known your mom and dad since I was a little girl growing up in Tusky. Dorothy used to give me allergy shots. My dad was also a good friend of Mac's. I'm so sorry for your loss. The world just lost a great man!
