Catherine Tyree Obituary

Catherine "Katie" Tyree
92 of Dover, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011, following a brief illness. She has been joyously reunited with her husband, Curtis William Tyree.
Katie was born on Oct. 18, 1918, to John and Helen Yakus, both immigrants from Yugoslavia who moved to Dover in the early 1900's and lived on Washington Street. She graduated from Dover High School in 1937, and married Curtis on Oct. 14, 1939. During World War II, Katie worked at the Reeves factory until the men returned home from the war. From 1968-1976 Katie and Curtis lived at, and were caretakers of, the Reeves mansion. She later worked at the Dover High School in the cafeteria. She was a lifelong resident of Dover and for the last six years was a happy resident of New Dawn Nursing Home, where she made many new friends. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, playing bingo, and listening to music.
Katie is survived by three children, Richard (Delpha) Tyree of Columbus, Nancy (Edward) Wilson of Dover, and Curt "Kirby" (Blanche) Tyree of Tuscarawas. Along with five grandchildren, Kathleen Gwynne (Steve Strohl) of Columbus, Adam (Debbie) Wilson of Dover, Dawn Tyree of Columbus, Donna (T.J.) Hersch of New Albany, and Curtis Robert Tyree of Tuscarawas. Katie always felt blessed to have known and spent time with her great-grandchildren, Connor Gwynne and Lauren and Kyle Strohl of Columbus, Tyree and Bailey Wilson of Dover, and Avery Hersch of New Albany. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins from around the country round out the large, extended family. Katie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Curtis; her parents, John and Helen; and her brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 1 p.m. in the Dover Burial Park with Dr. William Haggis officiating. Those unable to attend or who may wish to express a fond memory of Katie may sign the online guestbook by visiting the "obituaries" link on the funeral home website at
www.tolandherzig.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Grace Lutheran Church of Dover, 216 N. Wooster Ave. in Dover, where Katie was a lifetime member.

I loved her very much. I didn't have any living biological grandparents. She told me I could call her Grandma. She was truly a beautiful person. Inside and out. I miss her and think of her often.

We send our love to the entire family. May God comfort you all. I was truly blessed to know her as Grandma Tyree. I looked forward to the visits from her and Grandpa Tyree way back when in Big Beaver! Thank you Dawn and Donna for sharing your grandparents. They were wonderful, loving people! I didn't get the priveledge of visiting recently, but I have wonderful memories! I loved her like a Grandma. I truly appreciate her "adopting" us Price kids! I never knew my own grandparents. It was wonderful to have them for as long as I did. Much love from Glenn, Rowena, Sirena, Cassie, Andrew and Rose

Katie Tyree was the most amazing grandma anyone could ask for and she made my childhood magical. We used to have the most profound conversations about life, death, and heaven. It's a comforting thought for me to know that she now has the answers to many questions we pondered. I will miss her greatly, but am happy for her. Kathleen
