Doran Eugene Immel 1929-2016
age 87, of Sugarcreek, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday May 14, 2016 surrounded by his family at Community Hospice in New Philadelphia.
Doran was born April 25, 1929, in Dundee, Ohio to the late Garrison and Opal (Schweitzer) Immel of Sugarcreek, Ohio. In 1946, he met the former Helen F. Wertz and the two were married Jan. 28, 1950 in the Sugarcreek First Reformed Church (First UCC). Helen and Doran enjoyed 47 years of marriage until Helen's passing on Feb. 3, 1997. In addition, he is preceded in death by the late Barbara J. (Shutt) Immel, and Theodore Garrison Immel II.
Doran is survived by four sons, Timothy (Susie) Immel, Terry (Debbie) Immel, Theodore (Peg) Immel, and Tommy (Debbie Jo) Immel; eleven grandchildren, Matt (Vanessa) Immel, Angie (Kyle) Miller, Ryan (Megan) Immel, Kim (Bill) Hammerstrom, Jon (Kristy) Immel, Doug (Lynn) Immel, Mitch (Sara) Immel, Taylor Immel, Hunter Immel, Jessica (Brooks) Numbers, and Tony (Jamie) Immel; twenty-two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; his brothers, Max (Janet) Immel, Roger Immel, Keith (Peggy) Immel, Ken Immel, and sister, Maxine Gerber. He was happy to have enjoyed the companionship and friendship of BJ Miller for the past seven years.
Doran graduated from Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School in 1947. He started his career as an apprentice bricklayer doing work for Floyd Carpenter, the Finzer Brothers, the Wendling Brothers, and Gundy Construction. Doran worked for Gundy Construction from 1957 to 1992. Most of those years he served as superintendent of jobs, and was responsible for the construction of many commercial buildings throughout Tuscarawas County. Doran was an avid golfer and spread the love of the game throughout his family. He began playing golf at age 12, and instilled this same passion into his four sons, and many grandchildren, by teaching them how to play, and to honor and respect the game. One of his proudest legacies was having his sons play and coach the game of golf, which he loved so much. Doran enjoyed the fellowship with all of his friends at Sugarcreek Golf Course (Willandale), and his participation in the many golf leagues throughout the county. He spent many hours supporting the construction of the Willandale Golf Course clubhouse, and was honored to be a lifetime course member. He was also a founding member of the T.D.G.A., and its champion many times during his golf career. Doran was a member of Sugarcreek First United Church of Christ, the Lions Club, and the Garaway Booster Club. He helped with many projects during his lifetime and also served on the Garaway Board of Education. He volunteered to help in special programs at his son's and granddaughter's schools at Garaway and Dover. Doran got the most enjoyment out of life when he could be watching his children or grandchildren participate in their sporting and other extra-curricular events.
Calling hours will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, and one hour prior to the service, which is 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Smith-Varns Funeral Home at 115 Andreas Dr. Sugarcreek. Pastor Sharman Hartson will officiate and burial will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover.
