Harry Devore Obituary

Harry A. Devore, age 89 and a member of "The Greatest Generation," passed away Nov. 9 at the Hospice of Palm Beach County in Florida after a long battle with bladder cancer.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Harry Devore; a brother, Donald Devore; a sister, Doris Slocum; his son, Harry Devore; and his wife, Margaret Bandlow Devore.
He is survived by his sister, Kathryn and Bill Goshorn of Tuscarawas, O.; his three daughters, Rebecca Tedrick of Modesto, Calif., Dianna Hlavaty of Angleton, Texas, and Elizabeth Orr of Sebring, Fla.; and five stepchildren, Edward Bandlow, Joyce Neff, L. Thomas Bandlow, Doloris Tyska and Leonard Bandlow. He also leaves a legacy of 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Born and raised in Uhrichsville, O., as a young man Harry labored in the regional coal mines before joining the military. A U.S. Army veteran of the Second World War, Harry served with bravery and distinction in the India, Burma and China campaigns, where he earned several medals, including the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After receiving his honorable discharge, he took up the building trades and moved to South Florida where he worked as a stone and brick mason until his retirement in Ocala. Respected by his peers as a skilled craftsman, he was much sought after by local contractors and his neighbors. Harry was also an active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, VFW, and the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union.
A gravesite service will be held on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., where his remains will be interred with those of his loving wife, Margaret. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Harry's memory to the Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33467; (561) 494-6887, www.HPBCF.org.
