Henry Conrad Obituary

Henry A. Conrad
age 83, of New Philadelphia, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in Union Hospital at Dover. A son of the late Benedict "Ben" and Gisella Stanek Conrad, Henry was born at Canton, Ohio on Dec. 10, 1927. He was a 1946 graduate of Timken Vocational School at Canton and went on to serve our country as a member of the United States Army. During the Korean War, he was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. where he was an instructor for those in automobile school. For the next 40 years, Henry served a number of area firms as a large truck mechanic and ultimately retired from the former McKnight Trucking at New Philadelphia in the early 1990's. Henry was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and enjoyed watching them and other sporting activities on the television. Additionally, he was always up for a good game of cards with not only the company of others but enjoyed the challenge of computer card games as well. In recent years he had enjoyed the company of fellow veterans as he was an active member of the American Legion Post #139 at New Philadelphia.
Henry will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, the former LaVaun Wahl, whom he married on June 2, 1952, at the Scio Methodist Church; a daughter, Karen (Todd) Miller of Dover and a brother, Vincent Conrad of California. Two grandchildren, Tiffany (Chuck) Zobel of Dover and Ryan (Kris) Howell of Richardson, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Bella and Ava Zobel and Cole and Naiya Howell; and numerous nieces and nephews complete the family. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Eugene Conrad.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, from 47 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again an hour prior to services on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, from 9:3010:30 a.m. in the funeral home's chapel where Rev. Tim McCollum will lead a service celebrating Henry's life beginning at 10:30 a.m. Following the service, members of the Carl C. Stoller Post #1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW will render military honors. Burial will follow in the Conotton Cemetery at Bowerston. Those unable to attend may send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home's website. The family requests memorial contributions in Henry's name may be directed to Otterbein United Methodist Church, 156 Beaver Avenue NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

LaVaun, S0 sorry to hear about Henry. You certainly have our sympathy. I still remember him as the usher at the old Methodist Church in Scio, and he was always such a nice friendly man.
