Howard Karl Obituary

Howard Denis Karl, age 73, of 317 Freeport Piedmont Rd., Freeport, died 5:47 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va., following a lengthy illness.
Born July 6, 1936, in Girard, Pa., he was a son of the late James Henry Karl Sr. and Ruth Helene Shafer Karl Marks.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving his country in the Korean War. He retired in 1990 after 30 years of service with the City of Akron Water Department. He was a member of the American Legion. Howard was an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying fishing and hunting. He loved to have a good time, telling jokes and making people smile.
His wife of 32 years, Marie Woodhall Karl, survives. They were married Jan. 25, 1984.
Also surviving are his children, Sandra (Jeff) Morganstern, Robert (Beth) Karl, Kimberly Whipp, and Shari Karl; stepchildren, Joseph (Nadine) Woodhall and Anthony Woodhall; eight brothers and sisters, James (Vera) Karl, Roger (Marianne) Karl, Margaret (Paul) Jurmanovich, Patricia (Robert) Sandmann, Daniel Karl, Raymond (Robin) Karl, Susan Ellis, Marla (Donald) Denmin; eight grandchildren, Misty Bowman, Melissa Martinez, Matthew Williams, Ryan Karl, Brandon Karl, Alta Karl, Chase Whipp and Dana Whipp; two step-grandchildren, Morgan Woodhall and Mitchell Woodhall; several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Millie Karl; his stepfather, Albert Marks; a sister, Virginia Dunn; two brothers, Donald Karl and Russell (Chuck) Karl; and a grandson, Michael Williams.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, in Koch Funeral Home, 216 S. High St., Freeport, with Pastor Jim Hauser and Pastor Dave Koch officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday preceding the service at the funeral home. Following Howard's wishes, his body has been cremated.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Lakeland Group Ministries or Hospice of Tuscarawas.
Koch Funeral Home, 216 S. High St., Freeport, was in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made on the funeral home's Web site.
