John Pavick Obituary

John Pavick, longtime Carroll County resident, passed away Oct. 25 after a long battle with cancer. He was 86. Born Jan. 24, 1922, in Akron, O., he was the eldest son of Blaz and Reza Pavick. The family moved to Carroll County in 1924, where all the children would attend Dellroy School. John was a standout on the basketball and baseball teams and graduated in 1941 as class president.
He would go on to play baseball at Ohio State University until his enlistment in the U.S. Navy. A machinist mate and eventually engine room crew chief, he served on a destroyer escort in the South Pacific providing protection for the main fleet against kamikazes and Japanese submarines. He was discharged as a Chief Petty Officer in 1945.
He purchased a farm in Rose Township in 1946. The operation moved from dairy and general farming to poultry in the 1950s, and by 1983 was the largest farm of its type in northeast Ohio with over 110,000 laying hens. John served for over a decade as president of Northeast Farms, a poultry and egg processor in Columbiana, as well as president of Tri County Mutual Insurance and the Carroll County Regional Planning Commission, both for 10 years. He also helped organize the Sandy Valley Ruritans and served as their first president and was a member of the St. Mary's Men's Club, the American Legion Post No. 475 in Dellroy, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3301 in Carrollton and LONESAILOR.org.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; two sisters, Marie and Ann; and two brothers, Mike and Frank.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jean Pavick; one son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Dixie Pavick of Dellroy; two grandsons and their wives, Tony and Melissa Pavick of Rhode Island and John and Talina Pavick of California; one stepson and his wife, Jamie and Chris Dunbar of East Canton; one stepdaughter and her husband, Jan Roger Findley of Florida; four step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Following cremation, a Memorial Mass will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morges with Fr. Thomas Marut as Celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's name may be made to Hospice of Carroll County, 1040 Trump Rd., Carrollton, O. 44615. The Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia is in charge of arrangements.
