Andrew Cook Obituary

Cook, Andrew M. BALLSTON LAKE Andrew Michael Cook of Ballston Lake, died on January 28, 2017, while on vacation in southern Chile. He was 39 years old. Andrew was a talented athlete, a curious globetrotter, a dedicated Christian, and a beloved son, brother, friend, colleague, and teacher. A 1996 graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, Andrew was captain and leading scorer for both the men's soccer team and the men's hockey team. Andrew was an All-America soccer player and helped launch Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake's first ever hockey team. Andrew also played high school men's tennis. Andrew attended St. Lawrence University where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in economics, played soccer, was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and studied abroad in London, England. Andrew received a master's in conflict transformation from the School of International Training in Vermont. At the time of his death, he had just completed his master's in education and pedagogy from Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile. Andrew's life was dedicated to expanding tolerance and compassion as well as volunteerism. He had worked with religious leaders in New York City to improve interfaith relations, served as a counselor to high school students from war-torn Cyprus, as a community mediator, as a volunteer for Red Cross, and launched a "pay-it-forward" project to spur volunteerism in the country of Chile. Last year he raised enough funds to grant a child's entire Make-A-Wish request. He had served as an English teacher at Instituto Chileno Norteamericano and, most recently, as an English professor (Profesor en Instituto de Idiomas) at Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile, where he had resided for the past nine years. Andrew loved to laugh and sing, was an avid New York Mets fan, and lived his life very much like his favorite quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Andrew is survived by his parents, Andrew B. Cook and Mary Cook; as well as his brother, Peter Cook; sister, Sarah Cook-Raymond (Christopher Raymond); niece, Hannah Raymond; grandmother, Marianne Cook; uncles, John Cook (Nancy), Mark Cook, Larry Nealon (Linda); cousins, John Cook (Maria), Tim Cook, Caitlin Cook-Wightman (Matthew), and Julie Cook-Lynch (Tim); as well as great-aunts, Grace Massaroni and Bernedette Fritz; cousins, Steven Massaroni (Maria), Robert Massaroni (Nora), Linda Massaroni, Mary Perazzo (Norman), and Patrick Fritz. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 11, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 231 Second St., Scotia, followed by a celebration of life at the parish center at 45 Mac Arthur Dr., Scotia. Donations may be made to one of Andrew's favorite charities, Make-A-Wish, Chile: worldwish.org/en/donate; select "Chile" and add "In memory of Andrew Cook."

I knew Andrew from SIT. I can't tell you how many days I spent hanging out in his dorm room with our friend Dale - they were my best friends at school. Andrew was such a kind soul - one of the best people around by far. I took for granted that one of these days I'd visit him in my travels. I now have a son of my own, and if I can raise him to be as good a man as Andrew, I will have succeeded. Rather than rest in peace, I believe Andrew is still working in peace, just from the other side. Sometimes the very special angels are taken too soon. Much love and condolences.

Dear Mary, Andy, Peter and Sarah,
We are so very saddened by the loss of Andy. He was a great kid who turned into an extraordinary young man. I will always remember him as the short but fast kid on the soccer team, short in stature but oh so tall in character. He truly lived a life in the light of Jesus. I am glad Chris got to spend some time with Peter and friends. Rev. Peter Russo also spoke of Andy's life of kindness and caring at 5:30pm Mass at Our Lady of Grace Church. Please know Andy and all of you are in our prayers. My heart goes out to you. ❤

Andy - I had the privilege of being one of your coaches that first year of BHBL Hockey. You were more than a pleasure to have as a player. I'm glad to see you continued to grow and share your goodness to others. You will be missed on earth but something tells me your work isn't done and you will continue to look down on many. May you rest in peace and your family find comfort in your loss.

Peter, Mr and Mrs Cook, I am so sorry for your loss. As my Mom told me about Andy's passing, all I could think about was the times him, Peter and myself spent playing home run derby on the side street or NBA jams in the loft on the original Nintendo. He was a great kid and as I look back on the time I knew him and your family, I am so very sad to hear he is gone, but so happy to have known him. Peter, I am so sorry.

The true worth of a man is not only what he has accomplished in his life, but how he touched the mind, heart and spirit of those he came in contact with his entire life. Andrew accomplished many great things. The love his family, friends students and coworkers felt for Andrew will be an eternal light in their hearts. Rest in peace and we will see you in heaven.

Life is just a stepping-stone A pause before we make it home. A simple place to rest and be, until we reach eternity.

Everyone has a life journey, A path to take with lots to see, God guides our steps along the way, But we were never meant to stay. Our final destination is a place filled with love, his majesty and grace.

Today we celebrate the life of a son, brother, and friend who's journey has ended way too soon, one who has blessed us in ways only we can comprehend.

His journey has now ended. His spirit has ascended Claiming the great reward With Jesus, our Lord.

Andrew, may you find comfort within the kingdom of GOD, and may he bless you with the warmth of his love and give you the very same blessings in heaven as you gave to so many here on earth.

Our condolences to the Cook family in this tough time and may you take comfort in knowing you will one day meet Andy, on a bright and sunny day with the lord walking side by side. -God bless
