Anne Rosenthal Obituary

Rosenthal, Anne S. LATHAM Anne (Spath) Rosenthal, 55, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2007, after a courageous 14 month battle with cancer at St. Peters Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends. Anne was the loving wife of Roger Rosenthal of Latham and the caring mother of Erin (Brian) Sullivan of Manhattan, Kelli Rosenthal of Atlanta, Ga., and Timothy Rosenthal of Albany. Born in Rensselaer, N.Y. on January 3, 1952, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Donnelly) Spath of Rensselaer and the loving sister to ten siblings, John (Carol) Spath of East Greenbush, Marybeth (John) Zagata of Syracuse, Charles (Dorothy) Spath of Mansfield, Mass., James (MaryAnn) Spath of Colonie, Edward (Anne) Spath of Delmar, Timothy (Jill) Spath of Rensselaer, William (Janet) Spath of Rensselaer, Thomas (MaryBeth) Spath of Delmar, Joan (Chris) Krege of Delmar, and Peggy (Joel) Preston of East Greenbush. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who dearly love their aunt Annie. Anne received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Siena College where she and Roger met. They were united in matrimony on August 18, 1973 and had a loving marriage of 34 years, which was admired by all. Prior to teaching at Shaker, she began her role as a talented educator at Rensselaer High School. She continued her teaching career at Shaker High School in Latham, for over 20 years. She was an inspiration and role model to anyone that knew her. Throughout her battle with cancer, she remained strong and always kept her spirits high. Her faith in God and her unwavering trust have been amazing. She used her love for God as a compass and made her life a reflection of her love and devotion to him. Anne's family would like to thank her special friends Lorraine and Hank Puckey, Sue and Tom Wronowski, Linda and Gary Leventhal, and Nancy and Alan Ezrin for their many years of love and support. Funeral from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Crumitie Road, Loudonville, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. Interment will be in Holy Sepluchre Cemetery in Rensselaer. The family would like to thank the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital and the oncology nurses at NYOH for the care they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albany Chapter of the American Cancer Society and/or the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital. Condolence page at www.wjlyonsfuneralhome.com.

Anne Rosenthal was the BEST teacher. She got the point across like no other teacher did! Mrs. Rosenthal was one of the kindest, nicest math teachers I was EVER lucky enough to have... I don't know how I would have made it through without her kindness, patience, and amazingly encouraging smile.

She was a treasure to the teaching world and I model much of what I do after her kind and generous ways...

May you rest in peace Mrs. Rosenthal...

Dear Rosenthal and Spath Family,

I just wanted to express my deepest sympathies to you during this most difficult time. Anne was a true inspiration and an extraordinary individual who had a passion for life, teaching, family and friendship. I met Anne 11 years ago, she was one of the first few teaches I encountered while beginning my Shaker career. We have formed a lasting friendship -- she was so special to so many people, especially her fondness for her friends, her love for her family, and her enthusiasm for her students. Above all, she was the best ... and she always listened and cared and shared. We spoke frequently about her mom when my wife treated her while at Teresian House, the friendship she had with the Farrelly family, about family -- she was one of the first to give my daughter a present when she was born -- and her excitement about Kelly, Erin and Timmy's ventures to college, and the list goes on. It is true to say that people truly have a strong influence on others. I will truly remember Anne as a brave woman, a great teacher, and a sincere friend. She was determined with faith and support to overcome the obstacles she was faced. I admire her strength of character, devotion to life, and always reflecting on the bonds of family and friendship. I hope you find comfort in the many memories of Anne, I know I certainly will.

i cried both last night and this morning just grieving and mourning the sad loss of anne rosenthal. I remember stayng after with my tutor and she would be there working in her room too and she came over to me and we chatted and at one time she showed me just how much she cared about me by tellng me what she really honeslty thought of me and it was postive it was her noticing just how much i cared to try to improve and better myself and the fact that she could just notice and see and understand how hard i was trying just broke my heart it meant the world for her to finally understand what most teachers have missed all through my elementary and highschool education. i graduated shaker with having colllege credits in math with anne rosenthal teaching my university in the highschool college course math-HVCC Acrediited. anyways anne was such a personal motivator she was really good at aiding you to become the best you could for your own personal self and for that i love you anne rosenthal

I also attended Mrs. Rosenthal's funeral service earlier today, it was one the most moving services I have ever witnessed. Being a student in her freshmen math class, you just knew you had it made. Other teachings intimidated their students with hard tests and long amounts of homework... but not Mrs. Rosenthal, she knew how to be a good teacher just by connecting as much as humanly possible with each and every student of hers. The most fun we ever had in her class was when we were studying Greatest Common Factors, or GCF's. Mrs. Rosenthal was wearing high heels at the time and started stomping on the floor with them, yelling at the top of her lungs, "GCF, everybody... GCF, everybody... GCF, everybody". If ever there was a cheerleader for math, Mrs. Rosenthal was it. She will be dearly missed and her teachings will continue to touch the lives of her students and colleagues of Shaker High School.

Dear Jack and Carol, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. How flippantly and often did we respond to our children's complaints that "life isn't fair"? But for some reason it echos in our hearts at times like this and the only solace is to know that God doesn't always give us answers, but he does always give us comfort. Please accept our most sincere condolences on your loss.

October 24, 2007

I attended Anne's funeral today, and it was truly a beautiful experience. God clearly worked through Anne to reach so many people, how can anyone doubt she is specially blessed and is now with Jesus. It struck me how her love for God was the foundation of her life, and that everything emanated from that trusting relationship into her relationships with all whose lives she touched. I am awed by her faith, and I pray that her soon-to-be born grandchild may always think on his grandmother with a special closeness and love (a "guardian gandma angel"), knowing it was through so many prayers that he came into being in time for Grandma Anne to experiance that special joy with her husband and daughter. God's perpetual light shine upon her, and her loving family.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I was a student of Anne's many years ago. She was one of those teachers who truly believed in her students and helped them to believe in themselves. She was a source of inspiration to all.

October 24, 2007

Our son Harry, who was so senselessly taken from us in July thought that Anne Rosenthal was one of the finest teachers he ever had. He spoke of her often and asked about her health as her illness progressed. We all watched her bravely, cheerfully accept what God had put before her. She knew even while battling this horrible illness, that she had been given a gift, the beautiful gift of her husband and children, Mom and Dad, her brothers and sisters and ,of course, her friends. We all love her still, and now she is all around us like a giant rainbow, showering her love back. I know Harry and her are together, teacher and student, guiding us to help and learn from each other. That's what they would want us to do and maybe they are even working on some advanced calculus together. Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Dear Family,
Mrs. Rosenthal is one of those people I'll never forget. She was my rock on 9/11/01 as I sat in her class and learned of the attacks. We both had family in NYC at the time. Dear Rosenthal and Spath families,
I am writing to express my deepest sympathy with regards to the passing of Mrs. Rosenthal. She had been my teacher during all four years of high school, and although I disliked and struggled through her math courses, she somehow managed to get me through all of her courses. She always believed in me, and spent many hours beyond those in class helping me. She had the patience of a saint, and was a truly remarkable teacher and a great person. May your families be comforted by knowing how many peoples' lives she touched and how many people truly care.

To the Rosenthal and Spath Families:
I was extremely saddened to read of Mrs. Rosenthal's passing. I will always remember her kindness and dedication to her students as I was very fortunate to be a student of hers my first year at Rensselaer High School (1979). I struggled at grasping algebra and Mrs. Rosenthal knew that I had it in me to pass the regents even though I thought for sure that I had failed. She called me at home the evening of the test to tell me that I passed with a 67%! She was the only teacher in all of my schooling years to ever do that and I never forgot that call. I will pray that the Lord holds all of you in the palm of his hand in these next coming days. May the memories of special family times bring you comfort and please realize how many hearts your Daughter, Wife, Mother, Sister, and Aunt touched in such a positive way.

To Tim and the entire Spath family,

My sincerest condolences go out to all of you during this difficult time. Anne tutored me in geometry over 30 years ago, and withour her help and patience I would never have gotten through the class.

I had the privilege of having Mrs. Rosenthal as a teacher at Shaker High. She had an amazing dedication to her job and the students she taught. The year I had her I received 100% on a Regent's exam and I know it was because of her. To Kelli and the rest of the family, I send my condolences and keep you in my prayers.
