Arthur Herman Obituary

Herman, Arthur
SAND LAKE - Arthur E. Herman, Sr., 90, of Lower Bower Road died peacefully on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at his residence with his caregiver, Maygen Bussing, and his daughters at his side. Born in the Town of Berlin, Art was the son of the late George and Elizabeth Dobert Herman. Art was educated in the Averill Park Schools and was a 1951 graduate of the Averill Park High School. He served in the Navy for two years, from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He started working on the NYS Thruway with his dad and after working many aspects of construction found his lifelong passion building homes, starting his own business in the Sand Lake area, now owned by his son, continuing his legacy.
Art was the owner of the Lakeview Restaurant when a devastating fire in 1980, destroyed that historic building. With the help of many friends, Art rebuilt the restaurant, which is now run by his daughter.
Art was a longtime member of the Stephentown Valley Fish & Game Chub and the Averill Park Fish and Game Club, as well as Moose Lodge 655, and VFW Post 8093, both in Debary, Fla. Art enjoyed hunting both locally and in different areas of the country as well as fishing and boating on the St. Johns River. He was a very social person and loved making new friends and hanging out with his snowbird friends from New York. Later in life he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The last two years he looked forward to the nurse's, nieces and nephews hanging out with him.
Art was the father of the late Lori (Doug) Herman Hillman. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Silsbe Coulombe Herman; his children, Arthur E. (Cyndi) Herman, Bonnie (Joe Stevens) Wittman, Darcy (late Harry) Houser of Averill Park, Denise (Rick Glasser) Herman of Wynantskill and Matthew (Late Megan Fairlie) Herman of Weston, Fla.; stepsons, Daniel (Whitney) and Sean Coulombe; his sister, Marjorie (Kenneth) Neal of Buffalo; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and lifelong friend, Elizabeth Turner.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 18, at the Zion's UCC, Taborton Road, Sand Lake, followed by a service at 2 p.m., and burial in the Zion's Cemetery, with Naval Honors. The family requests donations be made to the Zion's UCC Taborton, 741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, N.Y. 12153. Visit www.perrykomdat.com for directions and a guestbook.

TO THE HERMAN FAMILY
AS A FRIEND & FELLOW WORKER [HARDWOOD FLOOR SPECIALIST], I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU THAT ART WAS A GREAT PERSON. WE SHARED A LOT OF GREAT TIME AT MANY OF THE DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT IN THE AREA INCLUDING S.R.& G CLUB AND THE LAKEVIEW. I ALSO LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE HOME I BOUGHT IN 77' SEEING IT WAS HIS 1ST HOUSE. I WAS THERE TO HELP OUT WHEN THE LAKEVIEW BURNT DOWN. HE WAS A HARD WORKER RIGHT TO THE END. I WILL MISS HIM SHARING HIS ABOUNDANT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT LIFE AND THE STORIES HE SHARED.
