Brian Connolly Obituary

Connolly, Brian NISKAYUNA Brian Connolly, age 52, passed away on July 31, 2021, at home, surrounded by his family, as he wanted. Born in Cork City, Ireland to Ann Connolly (nee Kenneally) and the late Eddie Connolly, Brian went to Cork Institute of Technology studying mechanical engineering. After graduation, he began work as a field engineer for General Electric, taking him to Austria, Argentina and Finland, to name a few. On one auspicious assignment in England, he met his wife, Gynger. They attended motorbike races (their first date!), and traveled around Europe, and subsequently had their daughter Sarah while living in Ascot. He and Gynger then relocated to Schenectady, where Elyssa was born. Brian continued to travel as a commercial sales leader, but mostly spent his time with family at home, at their camp in Bolton Landing, or with his family back in Ireland. Any spare time was spent doing what he loved: golfing (with a 2 handicap!), curling, and rearranging all plans to watch a Liverpool game. He loved having a drink with friends at Wolff's Biergarten, and a good meal at the bar at Mario's ("Best wings in town!"). Brian loved entertaining his friends and having fun, whether that was having a bonfire in the backyard or hosting his infamous Paddy's Day parties. He will be forever remembered as someone who loved having fun with his friends and family, with a Jameson in hand. His enthusiasm, good humor, sincerity and courage are an inspiration to us all. He is survived by his loving wife Gynger "Karen" Connolly and his daughters, Sarah and Elyssa. He is also survived by mother Ann Connolly; his brother and sister Mark and Susan of Cork; his sister-in-law Fidelma and brother-in-law Mark McMahon; his uncle Tony Kenneally of Skerries, Dublin; his niece and nephews, cousins, and too many friends to count. In addition to his dad, he was also predeceased by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gert and Henry Frick. We cannot emphasize enough our gratitude to everyone who helped us during Brian's valiant battle. Whether a call, text, plate, or just a hello, Brian truly appreciated every single person. Most notably, our family is forever indebted to Mike O'Hara, Niall Cuthbert, and Janette Gibbs, and the army of friends who had Brian's back. There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend, will be celebrated on Friday, August 6, at 9 a.m. in St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church, 1803 Union St., Niskayuna. The family requests no flowers, plants, or gifts. Donations may be made in Brian's name to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. The family only requests that you enjoy a good drink with friends and family, and remember "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Gynger - Mano and I are shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Brian's passing. My deepest sympathies to the family. I will always remember our times in Niskayuna and Brian's spontaneous helpful nature when he helped clear a fallen tree in our driveway when Mano was travelling and I was home with an infant and Divya. Divya has happy memories of her time at your house with Elyssa and remembers him fondly. Our condolences and love to you, Sarah and Elyssa. Sunanda

Dear Gynger, Sarah and Elyssa,

I was so sad to hear about Brian passing away in such a untimely manner. I have such great memories of him as our neighbor. I fondly remember him helping me pick out a snow blower after educating me on the pros and cons of different models and then renting a pickup to bring it home. We both joked about how trucks were such an American thing ! I also remember him playing with Divya and Elyssa in the deep snow where my footing was surely much worse than his. We would also stand in the snow gossiping about GE until the girls yelled at us to join them. Learnt a lot about Ireland from him.

Nothing can obviously fill the void he has left but in the girls successes in life there will always be a piece of Brian.

Our deepest sympathies.

I will always have fond memories of Brian especially his time spent with Gynger in the UK. Since he left the UK we didn´t meet often but he was a solid friend and colleague who could pick up from where we left off despite the years that had passed. He passed so young but I feel privileged to have known him and crossed paths and shared a joke from time to time. My condolences to Gynger, Sarah & Elyssa.

Dear Gynger, Sara, and Elyssa,

I was heartbroken to hear of Brian's passing. I truly loved they guy. We connected over bikes and although we did not see each other as much as we would have liked, we always caught up when we did. The man was so full of life and had such a great attitude. He could always be depended upon to deliver whatever it was and obstacles for Brian were just another welcomed challenge. I can only imagine the void that he will leave behind. Please accept my most sincere condolences on your loss.

Dear Gynger
My deepest condolences to you and your daughters. The obituary is a lovely tribute to Brian and is exactly how I remember Brian.
I am a ex GE TA (class of 92) as well and worked for a while in London while at Barking Power station while Brian and you were in London. I have many happy memories with Brian at TA conferences or the pub in Heathrow as we both were heading back to Cork. An absolute Gentleman who will be missed by all who had the pleasure to interact with him

Sincere sympathies to Gynger, Sarah, Elyssa, Mrs Connolly (Ann), Mark, Susan, Fidelma, Mark Mc & Tony. May Brian's soul rest in peace & YNWA.

I knew Brian initially through my time at GE as a field engineer when in 1997 he had been appointed as a manager engineering services in the Slough office ~1997. Certainly had fun times assigned at Barking Power Station & the North Wall. Brian became a 6 Sigma Black Belt when Jack Welch was in his pomp & my first GB project was completed under Brian's watch. In '98 our paths crossed in Schenectady where he had begun to build his career within GE.

Brian always had the bright side out. Albeit our paths diverged in life, when rarely we might meet over the last 20 odd years, he was good to give advice on transitioning from the field to office work in GE. It was easy to pick up a conversation with Brian. He never lost his grá for Ireland & pride to be a Cork man. That was always evident if the Rebel's, Ireland, Munster or Liverpool were playing. I'm sure Klopp made him smile.

I was unaware of Brian's illness & shocked to learn of his premature passing. He has left a positive legacy & will not be forgotten.
