Brian Slater Obituary

Slater, Brian J. NISKAYUNA Brian James Slater lost his struggle with his disease on Saturday, January 7, 2012. He was born in Niskayuna and was a graduate of Shaker High School and attended the College of St. Rose in Albany. Brian was a master of many things. He was a lover of the arts and had great vision for aesthetics. Brian was a true lover of nature and the beauty it brought us. He was a mechanical wizard with cars and anything to do with electronics. Brian was deeply sensitive and a talented poet and songwriter. He was a self-taught musician who could entertain everyone with the beautiful songs he wrote. Above all, Brian was a comedian and could bring a smile to your face and make you laugh with his many imitations, even when in your darkest mood. Brian's greatest moments and joys were spent on Christmas and the holidays with his family. He was a masterful cook, a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and there was nothing he loved more than riding motorcycles with his father. Brian was a kind and loving soul who touched many people. Most importantly, he was very protective of his little sister. Brian leaves behind his beloved parents; Barbara and James Slater; and his sister who he loved unconditionally, Erin Lee Slater. He also leaves behind his soul mate, fiancee and greatest love of his life, April Hotaling. He is the loving nephew of Karen and Raymond Peter, Rosemarie and Alexander Torossian, Robert Slater, whom he loved with all his heart; and his cousins, Morgan and Devin Torossian. Brian was predeceased by his grandparents, "Ga Ga and Pop", Rosemarie and William Shallcross and "Grandma and Grandpa", Marilyn and Robert Slater. He talked lovingly about them until the day he left us. Brian also leaves behind his closest friends who he always would introduce as "his brothers", Christopher Burnett, Timothy Wood, James Chiefari and Scott Costello. Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at New Comer Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204 in memory of Brian James Slater. To leave a special message for the family online, visit www.NewcomerAlbany.com To all of those who knew and loved Brian, please rejoice in having known him and know that our loving son is now at peace and his chains are broken, and he is now free. Always keep him in your hearts, and remember he loved all of you. There has never been a more compassionate and loving soul. As Brian would end every letter, I leave this for you in his own words"Think good thoughts and do good deeds."

To the Slater family,

I know this is incredibly late, but I have only just heard about the tragic loss of Brian. I hesitated sending this message so belatedly, but decided it is never too late to pass along my sincere condolences and let you know I am thinking of you. Whatever soothes your spirit, comforts your soul, brings you some peace...
that is what an old friend of yours, Jamie,
and all the family, is wishing and hoping for you.

Inspiration,move me brightly
Light the song with sense of colour
Hold away despair
More then this I will not ask
Faced with mysteries dark and vast
Statements just seem vain at last
Some rise,some fall,some climb
To get to Terrapin

Counting stars by candlelight
Some are dim but one is bright
The spiral light on Venus
Rising first and shining best
Oh,from the north-west corner
Of a brand new crescent moon
Where crickets and cicadas sing
A rare and different tune
Terrapin Station
In the shadow of the moon
Terrapin Station
And I know we'll be there soon....

Always in my heart sweet boy....

Not Fade Away....

Peace- Char xo

Last time I saw Brian was at the Animals concert at the Plaza about 5-6 summers ago, he was with his dad Jamie, they rode the bikes of course....after the show the three of us went on a nice long ride on a beautiful summer night, then we all went back to Bri's to listen to some good music and have a great conversation about life and the crazy twists and turns it takes....an amazing person has left us much too soon....

My heartfelt condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Slater, Erin, and April. I was good friends with Brian many years ago, but he always had a place in my thoughts and in my heart. While I find comfort in the fact that he is at peace and no longer struggles, I am deeply sadened that his bright light has been extinguished. Brian had a way of making you feel like you were the only one around when you were with him, he made you feel special. I always felt that Brian was raised well. Spending time at his family's home in Latham, it was evident that the love in that house was abundant. It even spilled over, on to his friends. I always felt welcome and a part of the family when I was there.

Whether you were Brian's best friend, family memeber, classmate, or aquaintence, he left his mark on you...his big smile, funny faces, warm embraces. The world was lucky to have had him. I was lucky enough to have once call him a friend. Love, peace, and positivity to all who will be missing him!!!

Sincerely,
Christa McGlynn Strunk
