He was an honorable sailor in our Navy. I worked with him at Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy. I am shocked to hear of his passing. But he was wonderful to know in our Navy service. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate! My love and prayers to the family.

November 27, 2017

It is fitting that we met Byron in Naples because it was a special place, filled with special people doing special things. And he was the most special of all. Everyone below so eloquently expressed that so anything I say would be redundant. In the crazy place that was Naples and the Staff, Byron helped keep it balanced. That spark everyone mentioned enriched us and we are better for having known him. God Bless Jackie and the family. You will be in our prayers. Mike and Cindy

Byron had a infectious smile that always made you feel good. We had a fun time growing up in Kaine Drive. It was a special time in our life's. It was so wonderful to have seen him and me his beautiful family 2 years ago at our impromptu reunion. I am so grateful we all that time together. Sending hugs, prayers and love to his incredible wife and handsome sons.

Byron, I am sorry to hear that you transitioned but glad that read there was no pain. I admire you for your sense of purpose and the ability to meet and exceed goals/objectives with a smile no matter how you were feeling. You made all outsiders feel as it they were a member of the team. I carry those lessons with me today and pass it on to others as I rise. Rise well shipmate. We have the watch. Abraham Borum III

Byron was truly an exceptional human being, officer, husband and father. Truly admirable and such a blessing to everyone. May he rest with the angels, and may those he has left behind be comforted in the rich memory of his life that will continue enriching those it touches.

We are so sorry to hear about Byron's passing. He will be sadly missed. It has been such a privilege to be his classmate and friend at US Army war college, Carlisle PA, a few years ago. I will always remember his cheerful disposition as well as his exceptional and sharp intellect. What great discussions did we have!
Betty and I hope that the love of family and friends will bring comfort in the days ahead.

I worked with Byron at Axcelis. We were friends outside of work and a bunch of us from work went skydiving and white water rafting in Maine. On our skydiving trip Bryon's first parachute did not open. I said to him that day, "I am glad it was you that happened too." Before I had a chance to explain why, he punched me in the arm slightly and said, "what the ___ Michelle,"? I said, "No NO, it is just because you have experience with bad situations and all of your training and you knew how to handle it. If that had been any of us it could have been really really bad." He was just blown away and for years gave me grief about it. I knew Bryon was a different kind of person the moment i met him. He had a sparkle and a twinkle that said trouble. But the best kind of trouble and the most fun kind of trouble. He was a great friend and an amazing guy. His accomplishments were extraordinary, and impressive. However, his personality and heart were far better than his work accomplishments. I have not seen or spoken to Byron in many many years but you never forget someone like him. I am so happy that he married and had 3 gorgeous sons. God Bless his entire family. I will miss him, I can't imagine how much you all will miss him. God Bless Byron Smith. You were loved and will be greatly missed my friend. Much love Michelle Marini

Byron is one of those rare individuals that if you are lucky enough to run across in life, he only enriched it. A brother Naval Aviator, colleague, friend, and confidant. His proudest accomplishment: finding Jackie and having three amazing sons - you give him eternal joy.

Memories - When you were trying to qualify as a pilot you called and stated you had missed landing 2 night flights and if you didn't get the third you would wash out...we talked, we decided you would be the ball, chill and be determined you would nail the landing the next night....and you did! You were so excited when you called back the next day ...kudos to you and your determination. When you were stationed at Whidbey Island you called to share the marvel and beauty of flying over the Alaskan tundra and then shared you dive bombed some polar bears! Really! When you were at an air show in MA, you asked the tower if you could barrel roll your plane prior to landing, they said no, but oh wait you did it anyway and a rainbow appeared!Of course it did..lol. When you lived in Carmel we drove up Rt1 to visit Big Sur, along the way we pulled over on a cliff to view the ocean it was breathtaking, but oh wait, when we got back into the Ford Thunderbird you restored it would not turn over but low and withhold you had a trunk full of batteries, just in case and off we went! You are special!

Love you
Valere

Byron's professional accomplishments are many.....far more than most people ever achieve. He had, for too short a time, the best wife and partner in Jackie. He instilled his personal character in their three young boys...his warmth, his humor, his intelligence, and, as Jackie so aptly said, his integrity. He leaves a hole in everyone's heart he touched which can only be filled by the wonderful memories of the man he was.....and will always remain. Much love, Don and Barbara
