Carol Simons Obituary

DELMAR After a lengthy, valiant and often victorious battle with cancer, Carol (Butler) Simons, went to her eternal life on June 16, 2003. Carol was a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Pace University, attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and performed and trained in London and New York, acting and singing in countless theatrical productions. During the last 12 years, she was a regular on the Park Playhouse stage, appearing as Tessie Tora in Gypsy, Elsa in the Sound of Music, Fay Templeton in George M!, General Cartwright in Guys and Dolls, Meg in Damn Yankees, and Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady. She also enjoyed working with the Family Players, as Grace in Annie, Marion in the Music Man, among others. One of the joys of her life was establishing Musical Moppets, teaching and enlightening pre-school children about the joys of music. Carol had a vibrant personality and was truly loved by all who knew her. She will be sorely missed but leaves a legacy of warmth, love and faith. Carol was the beloved mother of Breanna Butler; adored wife of husband Steve; and loving daughter of Joan Burke and the late William Burke. She is also survived by her brothers, Dennis and William; sisters, Patricia and Diana and their respective spouses, Ann, Susan, Frank and Brad; as well as many nieces and nephews who also loved her dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday evening from 4 to 8 at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Interment will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery. Contributions in Carol's behalf may be made to Gilda's Club Capital Region NY, P.O. Box 642, Latham, NY 12110 or Park Playhouse, 895 Broadway, Albany, NY 12207.

Carol was an extraordinary human being. I had the pleasure of knowing her as a fellow actor, and as a dear friend. She was class and sass all the way, and made everyone she met feel like they were the most important person in the room. Her love of life and compassionate soul will always be an inspiration to me and all those that knew her.

I met Carol in 1993 when we did a production of "The Music Man" with Family Players. She played Marion and I was Marcellus. She had such a beautiful voice and brought such presense to the stage. We continued to work together for many years to come, leading up to last summer at Park Playhouse where we again shared the stage in "George M!" I moved away from Albany in 1999, so I have not been able to keep in close contact with people there often. I am tremendously glad to have know Carol and her daughter Brianna. She is an extraordinary woman who brought so much spirit to everything she did. I will forever cherish the memories I have of my times with her and I just know she is singing glorious melodies right now. Rest in peace Carol, We love you.

The first time I saw Carol she was sitting on a piano at the Bethlehem Town Hall auditorium with the Village Stage group singing. This was my first time with Village Stage and I thought she was had the most beautiful voice I ever heard. (I also thought - I better leave I was way in over my head!) After she finished the song she jumped off the piano and come over to me and introduced herself and welcomed me to the group. She made me feel really comfortable. What a great person!

She also was an inspiration to Vicki who looked up to her and who miss her very much.

Love you Carol.

Carol and I worked on many shows together. She taught me never to give up and have faith in everything you do. She was a true champion! She will be sorely missed in the theater world, but mainly in my life.

God speed to her family. She's up there with all the big stars singing and laughing in the spotlight.
