Thank you, Dr. Carr´s family. Dr. Carr was one of the best mentors in the world and a great leader, accepting people without regards to genetics, skin color, race, national origin, gender, creed, etc. and loved us all the same.

I met Dr. Carr, sixteen years old, attending State University of New York at Albany. Dr. Carr made sure I received: food, remedial courses (even though I graduated in the top ten percentile of my NYC public high school class, I was not on same level as students with access to better education)/tutoring, books, speech therapy for lisp. My name was included in Who´s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. Each year Dr. Carr gave me awards and accolades for maintaining above a "B" average with double majors and minors including the most difficult courses; so difficult, they only accepted students with the highest grades. Whatever I requested or needed to graduate, he provided. Dr. Carr helped thousands of students without asking or expecting anything in return. Dr. Carr worked long hours, providing for us, obtaining grants for SUNYA´s Educational Opportunity Program making sure that we did not graduate with a lifetime of debt.

Thank you, Dr. Carr and family for giving me the foundation to practice law from 1996 to present 2021, twenty-five years and counting; licensed in seventeen countries including United States of America (New York and District of Columbia) with a stellar professional record, shaped and molded by Dr. Carr´s leadership. Words will never be enough to express my gratitude to Dr. Carr and family. Dr. Carr is my hero. His legacy will live on for generations.

To Dr. Carr's Family, Dr. Carson Carr, jr. was like a father to me. He was also my boss of many years and a mentor. At 8 months of pregancy, he invited me to apply for the Assistant Dean/Assistant EOP Director position at UAlbany's EOP. Not many administrators would do that given that I'd soon be on maternity leave. That didn't phase him in the least. My daughter came to see him as that giant man she'd run to with arms wide open asking him to pick her up. He was the human ride and without failure, as soon as he put her back down, she'd yell "do it again.." and he would. This is the side of Dr. Carr that I also saw while also seeing the side of the one that many feared as he was a man of principles. Being late, not doing your best, throwing away an opportunity, being irresponsible - not anything he tolerated of students nor staff. In 2008, he then called Chris and I into the EOP classroom to tell us he would be stepping down due to medical reasons. He was passing the baton to us - EOP to me and the other opportunity programs to Chris. It was one of the most frightening days of my career as Dr. Carr was a legend who shoes were just tooo big for anybody to fill. Dr. Carr - you will never ever be forgotten nor will we allow others to either.

May you be resting in peac. As I prepare to retire after 13 years as UA's EOP Director and 36.5 years in EOP, I can only pray that you have been proud of the work done after you left us! I love you and thank you for being the role model that you were and still are, in my life. You are a shining star in the sky and you continue to shine brightly.

One of my Favorite Heroes. Celebrating The Life and Legacy Of Dr. Carson Carr Jr. who went home to be with God on Friday, October 3, 2014.

Thank You God For This Great Man Of God and his living and lasting legacy in providing educational opportunities to the disadvantaged.

In a world of schools, colleges, and other institutions of learning, Dr. Carson Carr Jr. compelled us to obtain education out of earth, air, and sky. He taught us to be architects of our destiny, to take ownership and responsibility of our thoughts and actions, and he taught us how to love and care for each other. Through his leadership in the Educational Opportunities Program, E.O.P., and many diversity programs, Dr. Carr was jointly responsible for the recruitment, retention, and graduation of many underrepresented students.

Many that came from poverty stricken, low income, and single parent families have gone on to become first generation graduates and lead successful families, careers, and lives. The impact that Dr. Carr has on our lifes transcends beyond the college campuses and classrooms. He took young adults and groomed responsible men and women who contribute to the fabrics of our daily world.
He made men. He made women. He made leaders.
He loved us.
He embraced us.
He challenged us.
In loving us, he brought out the best in us.
In honoring him, we honor the very best in ourselves.

Thank You God and the Carr Family for sharing this GIANT with us. May his legacy continue to live in the hearts and minds of all. He did his best. Now he rests in the Arms Of God.
Thank You For Your Love

It's hard to believe that 5 years have passed since God took Dr. Carr home to be with Him. Not one day goes by that I don't enter the EOP Complex at the University at Albany where Dr. Carr gave 23 dedicated years of his life to this program and the students and staff that we proudly serve, that I don't look at his portrait that hangs at the entry way and I don't a) ask him to provide me with the strength to make a difference in the lives that I will interact with on any given day, and b) that I don't wonder at how he did it for 23 years! I was blessed to have known Dr. Carr for the 23 years that he was here and his voice lives in my heart and it lives in my head. As the one that he appointed to run his beloved EOP back in 2007, I thank him daily for seeing more in me than I saw in myself! And he did that for sooo many others! My biological father, Guillermo Martinez, was born on October 3, 1921 and my adopted father left this earth on October 3, 2014. I've been blessed by two amazing men helping to raise me into the person that I am today! I can only hope that they are both standing together up there in heaven looking down on me and all others - and are saying - she's doing good! Rest in peace Dr. Carr and Papi. Rest in peace...you are GREATLY missed, but NEVER forgotten and ETERNALLY LOVED!

Wow sorry I am late, where do I start. I will never forget this Hero for many reasons. Some I will not be able to fill on this page. Dr. Carson Carr, was a father to me, because I didn't grow up with a father and did not know how to relate to one but he showed me how. He was a mentor, someone that I can go for an advise. He was a leader, someone that when others panic, he stood still in confidence. Dr. Carr, I sure do miss you driving me early in the morning to my internship. I do miss you when i got in trouble and had to go to your office. I also miss your gentle smile. You were proud of us, even when we got in trouble, you lifted us up. Today, we will make your proud to carry the touch that you left for us, the touch to be selfless and not selfish. To lead by example, to have faith in ourself and to be always humble in all we do. Thank you Dr. Till we meet again in a good place high above

I just saw this today. Mr. Carr was my Algebra teacher at East Orange High. I had no idea that he later had become the principal. He was a solid, laid back teacher. The last time I saw him was at my sisters senior prom in 1966. He came over to our table, leaned down with that big smile of his and said, are you going to introduce me? I smiled and said this is my sister. He nodded grinned and moved on. I don't think he believed me. He was a great man Rest in peace Mr. Carr.

As a EOP student, you embraced me as a son, visited me in the hospital when I was injured, drove me back to campus, and many more. I remember when I ran into trouble, you were there to guide me. I will not be where I am today if it wasn't for you. I graduate next year with my Doctors in pharmacy and its all thanks to you. Thank you for being a great part of my life. And I Thank God for your life. I will continue with your work upon my graduation and will always mention your name.

My condolences to the family. Dr. Carr made a big impact in my life when I attended SUNY Albany. He pushed me through my toughest time and am so grateful to have met him. I have been remembering him all year and had a dream with him this morning and searched him on the internet to see how I can track him and say 'thank you'. I am sad to see he passed.

When I was a high school senior (1972), Carson Carr interviewed me as an applicant to Cornell's College of Engineering. He was kind and supportive and I ended up choosing Cornell over another Ivy, a decision which I will never regret. May his memory be of a blessing to all those who knew him.

I can honestly say that it is impossible for me to hear about great teachers without immediately thinking of my class time with Dr. Carr. He was and always will be one of the most remarkable educators and motivators that I have ever known. You wanted to succeed for him and he taught you how to have confidence and realize your full potential. God bless you Dr. Carr. You will never be forgotten.

November 19, 2014

May God's peace and blessings continue to support the family of Dr. Carr. To my Ithaca/Syracuse friend, you worked with God's children helping them to realize their potential. As they work in their chosen fields, they pass on the life lessons you taught them-to help those in need to dream, believe, and accomplish. Your legacy of love lives on through every life you touched. God blessed you with great gifts which you gave to the world.
Rest in PEACE.

It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the passing of a giant of a man, Carson Carr. Forty-plus years ago, he opened up a world to me, permitting me to dream even further than my mind would allow. Through his COSEP program at Cornell University, I was fortunate enough to attend an Ivy League college and begin a 20 year career at Xerox Corporation. I furthered my education by attending Law School and becoming an Attorney. Carson was a friend, mentor and role model, and I can't imagine how my life would have turned out without his intervention. My sympathies to Joyce and his family. I will never forget him. Truly "Shifting the Atmosphere".

In the of Fall 1978 Carson Carr suggested that I to apply to an "Ivy League" university that I'd never heard of, in a city (although only about an hour from my home), I'd never heard of either. Although I laughed at his suggestion, I did as he said, and in 1983, I graduated from Cornell University.

I will never forget my experiences as a student and employee when Carson Carr served as Director of the LeMoyne College Upward Bound Program. Under his guidance, I learned to use higher education to gain the knowledge, as well as build relationships and networks needed to become an individual who helped make a positive difference in the lives of those who come behind me.
With Carson as a mentor, I also had a successful career helping others strive for and obtain HS diplomas and college degrees.
Though God has called him home, may his family and friends be at peace in knowing the positive influence he had on those whose lives he touched will forever live on.

My husband was a student of Dr. Carr and he is forever grateful for the opportunities he gave him from the EOP program. Dr. Carr would be happy to know that Paul Chu is a successful treasurer and director of financial planning for Equinox in New York City, a wonderful husband and family man to Caitlin, Christopher & Colin. His vision for the EOP program gave so many students an opportunity they may not have had and we have Dr. Carr to thank for that. God Bless him and know that Dr. Carr spent his life inspiring young people who have gone on to become successful individuals.

I was a Second Chance scholarship winner in 2001 at UAlbany - due date was 9/11/01 - I was a day or two late with my application, but Dr. Carr accepted it. Without that award I could not have finished college at age 46. We never met formally, but he helped to change my life. I now work at a college and try to help "older" and other students get to graduation day. How lucky I was to have known him.

Dr. Carr hired me as a Counselor with the LeMoyne College Upward Bound Program when I moved to Syracuse in 1982. The lessons learned from him are invaluable. He was a tough administrator, but also a gentle giant. I will always cherish our friendship and thank him for the opportunity he gave me. He believed strongly that EVERY student walking through our doors had the potential for college! He helped make the dream a reality for hundreds at LeMoyne College and later at SUNY-Albany. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Carr and her family. May he rest in eternal peace with the Father.

For all of us who had the honor and the opportunity to know and love Dr. Carr: If we lined up every person who's life was affected by Dr. Carr, it would reach to the ends of the earth. Dr. Carr affected generations of people and will never know the true effect he had in this life time. He had some big shoes to fill and to even try would be impossible, what I am thankful for is that he left that path for us to follow them...the possibilities of where they will lead are endless...To the Carr family, may you find peace in your restlessness and serenity in your sadness...God Bless you and thank you for allowing us to be a part of his life...Kathy "Kai" Sims-Atlanta, GA (HEPP Alum)

I am an appreciative 2002 EOP graduate. The EOP program accepted me as a student in 1998; however, I withdrew from college in the fall of 1999. I did not intend to finish college after I withdrew. I was going to just give up. My roommate at the time and her father did not think this was acceptable and reached out on my behalf to Dr. Carr. Thankfully, he gave me a second chance even though at the time I did even not think I deserved one. He didn't have to help me, but he did because he cared. I was blessed with not just one but two opportunities to succeed in life because of Dr. Carr. I know the second chance was only given to me because Dr. Carr believed in me. I later learned that he actually fought for my second chance to be re-accepted to the EOP program. Dr. Carr taught me that sometimes you fail in life, that you have to be careful about your decisions because they all have consequences and that no matter what that you have to get back up, you have to get back on track and above all that you cannot give up as you progress in your journey in life. He believed in me at a time when not many other people did. He taught me a valuable lesson about forgiveness, about forgiving myself and about the importance of forgiving others. I would not have the opportunities I have in life without his help. He was an honest, perceptive, helpful, caring, forgiving, strong, wise and caring man. I am honored to have met him. Dr. Carr has greatly influenced my life. I am forever grateful to him for his belief in giving second chances. He has touched the lives of so many people by serving our entire EOP family as their leader. This man helped build better people during the entire course of his life. He was a blessing for all who were honored to have met him. God bless you Dr. Carr, God bless your family and may you rest in peace.

Dear Joyce, It is with great sorrow that Dr. Carr community in Haiti received the unfortunate news of his passing. Dr. Carr worked very hard to make the world a better place during his lifetime. He meant very much to administrators, staff and students of FILSECCAM schools k-16 in Haiti who are beneficiaries of his transformational leadership and humanitarian vision. With his hard work, and counsel, the FILSECCAM University flourished. Dr Carr honored us by giving FILSECCAM his personal library. This represents one of the many examples that demonstrate his outstanding leadership as a world class compassionate leader who was dedicated to serve people on all shores.
His legacy will be remembered and his work continued.
May God gives you and his family the necessary strength while we mourn him and grant us the courage to be inspired by his model.
Sincere condolences to all who are grieving his passing

I will forever keep your smiles , and stories in me, because you helped me to see clearly from all the storms that came my way! RIP, Dr. Carr, I will always love you!!!

Dr. Carson Carr, Jr. Friend, leader, educator, philanthropist, humanitarian! He was a positive presence in the lives of many, helping to shape the minds and hearts of persons like myself to mature into the understanding that the most important thing is that the future rests in the hands of those who help to shape it today! He has left some large shoes to fill, for he has done in his lifetime, what would take someone else 10 lifetimes to accomplish!
My sincerest condolences to the Carr family. Much love and much respect... Until we meet again, may Dr. Carr reside in Paradise...

To The Family of Dr. Carson Carr:

As a member of the East Orange High School Class of 1965, I met Dr. Carr at the beginning of his career as an educator. He began at EOHS when we entered as freshmen. We were always very special to him as he was to us. Long before we were mature enough to understand, he taught us that we needed an orderly learning environment with rules and expectations. For more than fifty years, we have highly esteemed him as a man, an educator, and as one who mentored thousands of young people to be the best that they could be. As he rests in peace, may his family find comfort and peace in his wonderful legacy.

Before going to Albany, there was a weekend in which students were invited to explore the campus. You were in charge of the EOP seminar for under privileged students. Although I never had you as a mentor, I respected your firmness. Unfortunately, I was denied EOP status but that did not take away my admiration for how authoritative you were. There was a kid who was talking and interrupted you. I don't remember exactly what was said but it was something along the lines as "If you came to school to talk, this school is not for you" and prompted him to shut up in a serious, but professional manner. To this day, I remember your voice and laugh about it all the time. There was no way I was going to talk in that meeting!! Lol...Be at peace Dr. Carr. One love.
