TROY - Cathryn Mary Bowen, 69, of Troy, N.Y., passed away on June 11, 2025, surrounded by love. Born to Eugene and Mary Lou Spanswick, Cathy graduated from Waterford-Halfmoon High School and went on to lead a life defined by compassion, love, and fierce advocacy for others.
Cathy was a loving mother and devoted grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Nadine (Jim) O'Connell and Keri (Brian) Rosher; her grandchildren, Emily, Josie, Cora, and Alaina; her brother, Robert Spanswick; and her former husband, James Rodney Bowen Jr. She was predeceased by her partner, Susan Frost; her brother, Gene Spanswick; and her sister, Susan Vartigan.
Cathy had an impactful career at Unity House in Troy, where she held a variety of roles over the years. She was instrumental in creating innovative housing programs - including the Independent Apartment Program - for adults living with mental illness. She always rooted for the underdog, and her work empowered others to live with dignity and independence. Her ability to connect deeply with people made her trusted and beloved by both clients and staff.
She had a creative, kind, and empathetic heart. Cathy cherished chatting over a cup of coffee and spending time with her family and friends. She collected angels and enjoyed creating unique art pieces, which she gifted to others.
