Charles Collins Obituary

Collins, Charles A.
AMSTERDAM - Charles A. Collins, 92, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
Charles was born and raised in western New York, the son of the late Herbert and Ethel (Bissett) Collins and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving more than a year of that time overseas. Charles worked as a watchmaker for many years. At first, he was self-employed and later worked at Frank Adams Jewelers and trained by Rolex, routinely working on them and even repaired Mike Tyson's Rolex. After retirement from the jewelry industry, Charles volunteered at the Schenectady Air Museum and took flying lessons, always had a fondness for photography. He also loved playing the drums and xylophone and was a drummer in a soft rock band called the Lancers. Charles had a passion for jazz music, specifically Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.
He was also always goofy and loved to annoy his grandkids, which they loved to get even in return. He was such a joy. He was always there when we needed him and never said no. I could go on for days, but he lived a full happy life with many accomplishments and was the most amazing father. He is an inspiration to all of us and we miss him terribly.
He was predeceased by his wife, Carole Collins; and was previously married to Joan Cookingham Collins who also predeceased him. Charles was also predeceased by a sister, Judith Tobey; uncle, Leslie Bissett; and stepson, Daniel Stevens.
Charles is survived by his children, Steven Collins, Cheryl (Anthony) Indelicato and Megan (Shawn) Sandy; stepdaughter, Denise (Jermaine) Jones-Stutz; grandchildren, Jayden Honsaker, Gabriella Menendez and Madison Sandy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins and his former wife, Diane (Gotobed) Collins.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. The funeral Service will be on Monday, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

I'm saddened to learn of this master craftsman's passing. I've collected wrist watches over the years and Charlie was always willing to step in and provide care and guidance. I first met him at Frank Adams where he worked on some of my first-rate pieces--Patek Philippe, Rolex, IWC, Omega, etc.. He was always wise, honest, genuinely creative (fitting old, odd movements to even more old, odd cases), finding parts sources in tightly controlled markets and of course, timely. We also talked a lot about our favorite contemporary jazz pianists, Diana Krall, Susanah McCorkle as well as the classics.

He knew when to stop with the watches and thankfully moved to aircraft instruments, spending many hours at the Schenectady Air Base where his skills were still keen for old instruments.

I send my condolences to all his family and Godspeed to Charlie. They don't make fine mechanical craftsmen like him anymore.

It was a very heartbreaking moment to get that phone call we all were not waiting for. You were the best grandfather a girl could ever ask for, you did everything for us. Youre my whole world and I love you with every bone in my body. I'm so happy your suffering ended and you are in a much better place. you lived your life and helped us live ours. You were always so happy and it was so obvious you cared about everyone, there was never a hating bone in your body. You were always making jokes, you never failed to make anyone laugh/smile. I love you forever, until we meet again.
