Charles Jasper Obituary

Jasper, Charles A. AMSTERDAM Our beloved father, Charles A. Jasper, 73, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2008 surrounded by his loving family and friends after a long and courageous battle which he faced with characteristic humor, independ-ence and strength. Born in Amster-dam, N.Y, he was the youngest of Walter and Mary (Tarmey) Jasper. He graduated class of 1952 from St. Mary's Institute, where he played varsity basketball and was voted "Best Dancer." It was there that he met the love of his life and the mother of his five daughters, Donna Ehmer. After marrying in 1954, he won many honors and tributes during a long and successful career with MetLife. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where he was an usher for many years. He remained an enthusiastic participant in SMI alumni events, serving as emcee at several reunions. He will be sadly missed by all his dear friends from St. Mary's. Chuck most enjoyed socializing with family and friends, entertaining everyone with his stories and quick wit. He was generous, strong and big-hearted, a rock of support to his family and friends. He enjoyed pool, poker, the Yankees, his friends at the Irish American Club and was an avid student of history. His daughters will always remember his phone calls challenging them to answer the final Jeopardy question. Chuck was also known by all as a great outdoorsman and hunter, generously sharing with many his knowledge, love and deep respect for the Adirondack wilderness. Most importantly, he was a proud and loving father and grandfather. In his own words, "My five girls brought a very special life to me in every respect, and greatened the family we have today." He was the beloved father of Noreen Jasper, Marla Gailor, Carolyn Jasper Johnson (Stan), Pamela Phelps (Darren) and Jacqueline Von Fricken (Ronald); adored "Poppi" to Rachel, Sarah, Dylan, Anna, Chelsea, Cassandra, Eric and Leah; Cherished brother of Norma Hamilton (the late Kenneth); Walter Jasper (Arlene) and Doris Hallenbeck (the late Gordon); brother-in-law of Marlene Ehmer and Gina DiBartolomeo (Michael); special uncle to many nieces and nephews, including treasured nephew and friend David Bubniak. He leaves many dear friends, including Pat Blanchfield, Bernie Going, Anthony Mancinelli, Charles Porcello and all the boys at the OTB; Elizabeth Benham and Pete and Patty Marcucia; predeceased by very special friend, Ron Doyle. The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Soo Lee and Maria Hall staff of St. Mary's Hospital for their attentive and compassionate care in our father's final days. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, N.Y. followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, N.Y. Calling hours are Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary. Memorial gifts in Mr. Jasper's name may be made to St. Mary's Alumni Association, Upper Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Pam,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I remember riding in the back of the VW bug when we were kids and going to Pesico Lake! "Chuck" will be sorely missed.

I was sad to see Chuck passed away. I worked with him @ Metlife way back when we were on Western Ave. in Albany. I always looked forward to Fridays because he wrote the thought of the week for our production bulletin. He had a way with words. My condolences to Chucks family.
