Charles Tuckerman Obituary

Tuckerman, Charles S. Ph.D. AVERILL PARK Charles Sanders Tuckerman, Ph.D., of Taborton Road, died at home on Wednesday, January 3, 2006 as a result of Parkinson's disease. Born in Boston, Mass. on October 2, 1922, he was the son of the late Leverett Saltonstall and Linda Scarritt Tuckerman. He was the loving husband of the former Lisa Lehto Tuckerman whom he married in Finland on August 12, 1963. Dr. Tuckerman was a graduate of Brooks School in North Andover, Mass. and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College. He continued his studies at Harvard University, receiving a doctorate in linguistics. He held teaching positions at Harvard, Indiana University, Tulane University and for 12 years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy. Charlie was a United States Army World War II veteran serving four years in Europe under army intelligence. He was part of the D-Day Invasion. He was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945. Besides doing linguistic research, his lifelong interest was classical music. He was an accomplished organist and also played the piano. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lisa Tuckerman; a daughter, Carol Tuckerman and her husband Steve Messick of Dundee, Ore. Relatives and friends are invited to the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Oakwood Cemetery, Troy on Tuesday morning at 11 where Rev. Dr. Harold D. (Hap) Carrier will officiate. A Military Forces Honor Guard Service will follow. Following cremation, private inurnment take place in the Tuckerman/Saltonstall family plot in the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem, Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Higgins Funeral Home of Stephentown.
