Clarence McDonough Obituary

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. Clarence J. McDonough IV Jamie died in his sleep at his parents' home in Williamstown, Mass. on Friday, May 7, 2004 at the age of 36 years. Jamie graduated with honors from Chatham High School in Chatham, N.Y. in 1986. He later received a B.A. degree from Manhattenville College in 1991 and a master's degree in architectural history from the University of Virginia in 1995. Jamie was a fifth generation to Dr. Albert VanderVeer of Albany, N.Y., one of the earliest settles on Big Moose Lake. Dr. Albert was a world-renowned surgeon who, following his retirement, purchased a large parcel on the east shore of Big Moose Lake from James Higby and, in 1906, constructed a family compound still in existence today that he called Alkmaar. Alkmaar remains in the VanderVeer-McDonough family and Jamie, along with his family, enjoyed vacation time there every summer from the time he was six months old. He was employed as a personnel recruiter by Oxford Health Care until October of 2000 when he purchased the Village Cottages and Alkmaar House Bed & Breakfast resort business in Old Forge, N.Y. He proved to be a genial and popular innkeeper as the business flourished. Jamie is survived by his parents, Clarence Mac and Marianne McDonough of Williamstown; a brother, Garth McDonough and his wife Dawn of Stoughton, Mass.; a niece and nephew, Ciara and Grant; and an uncle, James A. Rennia of Dover Plains, N.Y. Jamie also leaves his cousins, Jeffrey and Teri Rennia of Binghamton, N.Y., Sephanie and Joseph Carr of Woodbridge, Va. and Heather and Randy Bishop of Wake Forest, N.C. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Big Moose Chapel on Big Moose Lake, N.Y. Burial will take place in the family plot in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, N.Y. Memorial donations are suggested for the Berkshire County Humane Society through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 31247.
