Coreen Hallenbeck Obituary

Hallenbeck , Coreen
POWELL, OHIO - Coreen Adeline Pryor Hallenbeck, of Powell, Ohio. August 2, 1926 – October 30, 2023
Coreen was born in North Hornell, N.Y., to Winfred N. Pryor and Mildred Clark Pryor. Although Coreen was an only child, she had 28 first cousins who she always said were like her brothers and sisters. She graduated from Hornell High School in 1943, and she went on to study dietary science at Keuka College. When her major was eliminated, she transferred to Syracuse University, graduating in 1947.
It was in Syracuse that she met Lewis W. Hallenbeck. After they married, they settled in Hornell and started their family, raising six children. When the children were older, for many years Coreen taught homebound children who could not attend school in person. In 1978, Coreen and Lewis moved to Albany, N.Y., and in 1981, Coreen started a genealogy business, which she ran for more than 37 years, researching for individuals, companies, museums and authors.
Coreen was always happy and grateful. She also was a kind and generous person, not just to her family, but to her community. She was involved in the Fortnightly Club and AAUW in Hornell, volunteered at the Albany Institute of History and Art and was a long time member of Bethany Reformed Church and Friends of the New York State Library in Albany.
In 2001, she was honored by Keuka College as an alumna for "Effective Use of Retirement Years." Coreen also enjoyed adventure and travel. She enjoyed tennis, golf and bike riding, spending time hiking and walking in the woods, and at 68, began cross country skiing. She had traveled to much of the U.S., and to Canada, Europe, England, Russia, eastern Europe, Egypt, the Far East, the Philippines, Japan, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, the Caribbean, Cuba and many other places.
Coreen was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Lewis; her son, Patrick; by her son-in-law, Mohamed Kilany; and daughter-in-law Mary Ann (DiGregorio) Hallenbeck. She is survived by her children, Julianne Hallenbeck of Powell, Ohio, Margaret Hallenbeck of Philadelphia, Pa., John Hallenbeck of Rochester, N.Y., Brenda Hallenbeck (Gerard Palace) of Framingham Mass., and Thomas (Kellie) Hallenbeck of Sacramento, Calif. Coreen is also survived by grandchildren, Rebecca Miller, Charles Palmer, Jessica Hallenbeck, Gaelen Hallenbeck, Jennifer Hallenbeck, Gregory Hallenbeck, Timothy Palace, Christopher Palace, Allison Hallenbeck, Quinn Hallenbeck and Jacob Hallenbeck; as well as 13 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Carole Gellman.
Services were held in Hornell, N.Y., on November 4, 2023. Burial was at Alfred Rural Cemetery. Contributions in Coreen's memory may be made to the Hornell High School Alumni Association, PO Box 135, Hornell, N.Y. 14843 , or the Hornell Public Library, 64 Genesee St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843.

I knew Coreen and Lewis over the course of many years when I worked at the New York State Library. Such an intelligent and pleasant researcher! Full of enthusiasm for the library and its collections, a joy to work with. She will.
be missed.
