Daniel Flanagan Obituary

ALBANY Daniel J. Flanagan Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Woodside, N.Y., he moved to Albany at age six with his parents, Michael and Kathleen Flanagan. Dan served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge in 1952, and subsequently returned to Albany to attend Siena College. It was on St. Patrick's Day, 1956 that he met the woman who would become his wife, best friend and soul mate, Joyce Hanley. They married July 7 that same year. Dan embraced life to its fullest in his own quiet way. He will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, gentleness and kindness to all he encountered. He loved a good meal, a good song, a good laugh and a good win by the N.Y. Giants. But mostly, he loved spending time with those he loved and those who loved him. He is predeceased by two brothers, Michael and Arthur, and three sisters, Joan Radler (Robert), Barbara Santiago (Paul) and Eileen Renzi (Frank). In addition to his wife Joyce, Dan is survived by his children, Tracy, Kathleen Engel (James), Michael (Janet), Daniel Jr. (Susan) and Gregory. Papa will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Olivia, Gregory and Rory Engel; Madeleine, Daniel III, Jillian and Shea Flanagan. Dan is also survived by four sisters, Marion Waite, Ellen Catalano, Doris Barr, Kathleen Loerzel, and one brother, Thomas DePalma. He is also survived by a large, devoted family of nieces, nephews and cousins, both here and in Ireland. The family thanks Drs. John Caracandas and Stephen M. Hillinger for their compassionate care; also the wonderful nurses in the oncology unit on Four McCauley, who truly are God's angels. Special thanks to Maureen Ferrandino, whose continual love, guidance, and support for her sister and her family will be remembered always. Calling hours will be on Sunday, July 9 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave., Albany. A Liturgy of Christian Death will be celebrated on Monday, July 10 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John-St. Ann's Church of the South End, Fourth Ave. and Franklin St., Albany. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the St. John-St. Ann's Community Center, 88 Fourth Ave, Albany, NY 12202.

To the Flanagan Family, So sorry to learn of your great loss of Danny. I have many fond memories of our wonderful times at Snyders Lake with Danny and Eileen. I don't know your Mom stood all the jitterbugging on her front porch. They were great times and I send you all my love and prayers. Sincerely, Pat Mendro Smith

Kathy and Family I am so sorry for your loss, he was a great man, and will not be forgotten. I remember when Greg and I got married we didn't tell anyone, but we did stop to see Dan, he had a joke and drink with us (I still have the drink straws that he wrote the date on) Greg and I will not forget him and will keep him in our hearts

Aunt Joyce and Family.

I would first like to express my heart felt sympathy for your loss and wish I could have been with you all to celebrate Uncle Danny's life and to listen to the stories of how much he loved life and you all.You have all welcomed me into this extradoinary Family with no reservations and I am blessed to know and to have known you all. My fondest memory of Uncle Danny was this past Christmas with the whole family sitting in Aunt kathy's living room and listening to the gifted story teller passing down

the Flanagan legacy to the next generations of Flangan history makers. Although I have only known him a short time I will never forget him or the kindness he has shown me and to all those lucky enough to have known him.

How valuable and fortunate it is to have known a man who could make you laugh with his words; comfort you with his presence; inspire you with a smile; challenge you with little more than a look and console you with just a touch of his hand. I truly consider myself lucky to be counted as one of the many to have known, spent time and been blessed with your presence. I know there are many who have gone before you, many who have waited so patiently to be with you again, Dan. You will be missed...

I heard my first real ghost story from him at Snyder's Lake. I learned from him what a real joke was. So, I say thanks to him for my sense of adventure and my sense of humor, no matter how black it may be. So, thank you, Uncle Dan, and farewell.
