Daniel Flanders Obituary

Flanders, Daniel H. REXFORD Dr. Daniel H. Flanders, 72, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 7, 2017. Born in Albany, Dan was the son of the late Heather and Allen Flanders of Altamont. Graduating from Guilderland High School in 1962, he attended the University of Buffalo for his undergraduate studies, where he continued for his doctorate of dental surgery. A captain in the U.S. Air Force, Dan served as a dentist from 1969-1971. He attended the University of Nebraska Endodontic Residency Program and in 1973, began his career in Schenectady in endodontic private practice. He was a member and past president of the 4th District Dental Society, as well as the Schenectady County Dental Society; a member of the New York State Dental Association, Schenectady Dental Study Club, American Dental Association and American Association of Endodontists. He also lectured extensively and authored articles for the New York State Dental Journal and the Journal of Endodontics and served as a member of the Malpractice Review Board for the Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company. A passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed photographing nature, Dan was an avid fly fisherman in pursuit of brown and rainbow trout in rivers around the globe. Dan was an enthusiastic pilot who accrued over 4000 hours and held many ratings including CFI (flight instructor), IFR, multi-engine land commercial, single-engine land and sea. His Cessna 185, known as "Delta Fox," was his prized possession, flying her across the U.S. and as far as Alaska, the Bahamas, and Mexico. His sense of exploration was unbridled, and with two friends, they piloted a twin engine plane across the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland and back. On his last great adventure, Dan and his wife, Michelle, piloted themselves in a single engine plane across Africa. Dan was a talented woodworker, having built his own log cabin on the family island in Canada where he made over 400 water landings in Delta Fox. His cabin is where he sought peace and solitude with his family. He is survived by his wife, Michelle; his daughter, Dr. Susan Cushman (Dr. Jeremy Cushman) of Honeoye Falls; and son, Daniel Flanders Jr. of Rexford; beloved grandsons, Riley and Thomas Cushman; brothers, Jim (Chris) Flanders of Scotia and Dr. John (Sharon) Flanders of Saunderstown, Rhode Island; many nieces and nephews; his aunt, Betty Jane McCabe of Cincinnati, Ohio; cousins, Sheila McGuire of Cazenovia, Peter Galway of Westchester, Pennsylvania and Andrew Galway of Cincinnati, Ohio. The family would be remiss to not mention Dan's employees, three special women in his life, Teresa Coville of Scotia, Lou Ann Cleary of Rotterdam, and Frances Hoffman of Esperance. They were loyal, devoted, and always professional; he cherished them and considered them family. Dan's family would like to thank those who helped him in his cancer fight, especially the staff of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, St. Peter's Hospital, and Community Hospice of Saratoga County. In accordance with his wishes, a private celebration of his life will be arranged by his family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please perform an act of kindness in Dan's honor. I remember Dan and his parents very well. They were neighbors of my "first" husband Eugene Jordan. Dan was a very special person and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to get to know him and his parents. I'm sure we'll see each other down the road in Heaven.

I was saddened this morning to learn of Dr. Flander's passing. I knew him only from a patient-Doctor point of view, but found him to be such a kind and lovely man. My condolences to all his family, I can only imagine how much you miss him.

I remember Dan playing saxophone in the GCHS band, with me on trombone. I laugh when I consider how unlike Band Camp in American Pie was, compared to playing in our band. As I remember, Dan was a good musician, and I wonder if he continued playing after high school.
I used to kid Dan about being one of the first in our class to sport longer hair. He had a John F Kennedy do, and I had a close cropped flat top that was not even cut for a week after I joined the Army. It looks like that JFK do served Dan well over the years, although (from his picture), perhaps, a little thinner in recent years. ;)
I missed not seeing Dan at several earlier reunions that I attended. And then I was unable to attend the 50th (due to local wildfires) when he did attend.
My sympathies to all of his family who I never got to know. It sounds like you have wonderful memories to forever cherish.

Dear Michelle, Danny and Susan and family, Fran and I had the wonderful opportunity to have Dan fly us to the Island from our home town. I was a little nervous at first but i quickly realized there was no need to be nervous. He was an amazing pilot with such great instincts. On that trip I learned something about myself. He taught me that I had little confidence in myself and that i just had to challenge myself to gain it. He did this all without saying a word. I will forever remember him and that trip. He believed in me that day and it made an impact on my life. What a wonderful gift I received. We all will miss Dan and his gentle ways.

We were referred to Dr Flanders approximately 7 years ago by Dr. Christophey Reilly and will be eternally grateful to Dr. Reilly. Dr Flanders performed several miracles for us. If we could only praise him for his professional excellence, that would be enough for most people, however it is was just a small part of this fine man. His amazing accomplishments seemed impossible to achieve in one lifetime and yet his sincere humility in spite of those accomplishments was overwhelming. We were honored and humbled to know him. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

I was not a close friend of Dan growing up, but we often had nice conversations in class at GCHS. He evidenced a gentle and refined manner, even in 9th grade. Once, in 9th grade,I asked him what he was interested in. His reply: "I'm going to be a dentist." I was forever amazed at his early self-awareness and ambition. A great loss to his family and community. Much love to you, Dan.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Daniel. Although I only knew him for a few years, while married to his cousin, Eugene J. (Gino) Jordan, it surely sounds as though he had a full and successful life with no regrets. I loved both his parents so much. They were always super nice to me and I am sorry to hear of their loss as well. Love to you all.

Mickey, Sue and Danny,

I was so saddened to hear of Dan's passing. It's so cliche to say that he's in a better place, but it's true because now he's free of the pain. Just know that we are thinking of you and are always here for you.

Sending my love to you all, Aunt Sibyl
