Daniel Keenan Obituary

Keenan, Daniel G.
ALBANY - Daniel G. Keenan passed away peacefully at home June 3, 2024. He was 90 years old. An Albany native through and through, Dan was the son of Daniel A. and Josephine O'Donohoe Keenan. He was a graduate of St. Teresa of Avila Grammar School, Christian Brothers Academy class of '51 and the Simmons School of Embalming and Restorative Arts. Dan spent two years in the Army with the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He returned to Albany in 1955 and fulfilled his ambition to take control of the family funeral business started by his father in 1923. Dan was proud to celebrate the 100th year of the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home in 2023, with his daughter Marie as the third generation.
In 1957, Dan married Theresa Joyce Dembski and together they worked and supported each other for 67 years. He was predeceased by his dear sister, MaryJo (George) Rutnik. In addition to his wife Joyce, he is survived by his daughters Terri (Joe) DeMaria and Marie Keenan; his four grandchildren, Dan and Tedi DeMaria, Liam and Aine Keenan Tobin; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
From an early age, Dan viewed being a funeral director as a vocation and a call to service. He demonstrated compassion and care for the families he met and felt privileged to serve them. Dan was a role model to his family as well as other members of the funeral profession for his compassion, honesty, sensitivity and kindness. He was committed to serving the Daughters of Charity and supported their mission. As a longtime Communicant of the former St. James Church, now Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, he served as a trustee for over 35 years and was a continuing supporter and former council president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In 2004, Dan was recognized by The St. Peter's Hospital Foundation with the Catherine McAuley Award in honor of his vision, guidance and support which has served to strengthen the mission of St. Peter's Hospital and the work of the Sisters of Mercy. Dan was a member of the New York State Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, the Knights of Columbus, Council 173, the Sheehy-Palmer Veterans Post 6776, the Normanside Country Club, and the Helderberg Lake Community Association.
Dan was a passionate Notre Dame Football fan and loved listening to classic jazz music. We know where he is now, his favorite jazz tunes will be playing, and the Fighting Irish will be winning the game. He was a devoted son and brother, a cherished husband, a loving father, treasured grandfather, and a dear friend. Our family will be forever grateful to his life-long friend and Army buddy Jack King. Dan will be deeply missed. Saint John the Baptist de La Salle pray for us.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 7, from 4-7 p.m. at the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Avenue, Albany, N.Y. 12209. His funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 8, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 391 Delaware Ave. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. For those who wish, memorial contributions to benefit Saint Catherine's Center for Children Foundation Endowment in memory of Daniel Keenan, may be made to SCCC Foundation Endowment, 40 N. Main Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12203, c/o Michele O'Hare, or to St. James Food Pantry, 391 Delaware Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12209. Online condolences may be offered at www.danielkeenanfuneralhome.com

Joyce, Marie and family,
My father, David Perry, was an old friend of Dan´s from many, many years ago. My dad passed away last September. He always had wonderful memories of old times and even though we had moved away from Albany many years ago, of course, we would always see Dan when any of our family passed away because we always went to Keenan´s.
Prayers for peace and know so many are remembering Dan most fondly.

Many years ago I worked as a Hospice Home Care Nurse for St. Peter's Hospice and remember Mr. Keenan fondly for his compassionate care of so many of our patients at home, of their families and always asking after the nurse as well. Whether he was called at 2 pm or 2 am, his patience and care was the same. RIP Daniel Keenan. Sister Donna Conroy, RSM

Mrs. Keenan and Family,

I just want to extend my condolences on the passing of Mr. Keenan. He was a classmate of my late mother, Eleanor Lyons Hedderman from St. Teresa's Grammar School, and she always spoke fondly of him over the years.

When Mom passed away in August 2012, Mr. Keenan took the time from his busy schedule to attend Mom's wake at The Parish of Mater Christi (formerly St. Catherine of Siena Church), which my family greatly appreciated.

Again, please accept my sympathies on your loss, and I'm thinking and praying for you during this difficult time.

Mrs. Keenan, Terri, Marie and the family,
I first met Mr. Keenan "Dan" when I was only 14 at St. Peter's and he was such a kind gentleman. I got to know him over the years as a Dad at Mercy High School and through a professional role between nurse and Funeral Director then as the family member depending on his professional services. No matter which role I encountered him through he was always that same kind, caring man who was also a consummate professional. I valued the relationship we developed then and now ... he will not be forgotten. He earned his Angel wings over and over. May the wonderful memories give you comfort.

Sincere condolences from the Bloomer (Martin/Schenk) family. Mr. Keenan saw our family through many difficult times and was always kind, gentle and accommodating. Growing up at St. James meant we were all neighbors and friends. Fond memories of all of you. We wish Mr. Keenan the peace and rest he deserves after all the good work he did here on Earth.

Dan got his wings a long time ago. He has been an angel on earth proving it. Dan wouldn't think twice about the little time he had & would stop & give our dad a ride, no matter how far it was. A special man.

As a resident of Albany for 50 years, I worked with Dan through Whitehall Little League with the teams that he sponsored. Never met a person more committed to the people of his community. He truly was the "good and faithful servant."

A fine and caring gentleman, so supportive of families and people who lost their loved ones, and conducted himself with dignity. That's not to say that Mr. Keenan did not have a wonderful sense of humor, always announced by the twinkle in his eyes. Many thanks for his years of seeing family and friends off on their final journeys as well as the Veterans he looked after even when they had no one else. With sincere condolences to Joyce Keen, a special person in her own right, and the Keenan family,
Linda Wolff Weiss, VA Medical Center Director (Retired)
