Daniel Maxwell Obituary

Maxwell, Daniel
SCHENECTADY - Daniel F. Maxwell, passed away peacefully, at home, early Wednesday morning, June 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 72 years old.
Dan was born in Rochester, N.Y., on January 27, 1953, to the late Francis and Rosemarie Garland Maxwell. He was a graduate of The Aquinas Institute of Rochester, and thereafter received a B.P.S. from SUNY College of Technology, and a Masters in Public Administration from the Rockefeller School of Public Administration at SUNY Albany.
Driven by a lifelong commitment to service, Dan dedicated 43 years to a distinguished career in the juvenile justice system, retiring in June 2020. He held various positions within both the private and public sectors, including 35 years with NYS government, which culminated in his leadership role as Director of Upstate Services. His dedication to positively redirecting young lives was the cornerstone of his life's work. Beyond his professional life, Dan's commitment to community flourished through his volunteer roles as a coach for the Northside Little League and as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau.
Dan found joy in the simple pleasures of home and family, especially during the easygoing days of summer. He enjoyed working in his yard, nurturing flowers, ensuring a perfectly manicured lawn, and soaking up the sun by his immaculate pool after his work was done. His grand pups, Louis and Teddy, were a constant source of happiness and laughter for him.
Among Dan's many passions were his annual beach vacations to destinations like Cape Cod, the Outer Banks, and the occasional Caribbean Island. His love for a wide range of music spanning decades, including favorites like Eric Clapton, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Santana. Summers spent at the Saratoga Race Track, trips to New York City, and his loyal support for the New York Yankees, and Providence College Basketball.
Dan was a natural mentor, generously sharing his insights and teaching others with enthusiasm. He was truly our "go-to guy," always ready to offer insightful advice on just about anything. More than anything, he was a devoted husband, a world-class father, and a man of exceptional character and strong principles.
Dan leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Ann Marie Ryan Maxwell; his cherished children, Lauren (Thomas L.) McCormick and Ryan Maxwell; and his loving sisters, Katie (Bill) James, Mary Beth Maxwell, and Roseanne Maxwell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and was predeceased by his sister, Colleen Maxwell.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, for their exceptional and compassionate care provided to Dan throughout his journey.
Relatives and friends are invited to call, on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany, N.Y. 12206. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady, N.Y., Monday, June 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Rite of Committal at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, N.Y.

My deepest condolences to the Maxwell family. I worked with Dan at OCFS, he actually hired me. Dan was always deeply respectful to all. He had a amazing talent to give 'cut to the chase' advice. Dan worked with his heart along with his many years of experience. He was extremely dedicated to serving NYS and was especially focused on the well-being of our youth in the juvenile justice system. He will forever be remembered.

I am so sad that I did not know of Dan's passing earlier. My name is Judith Hartman and Dan was the Director of our Detention Unit for OCFS. What a great man who we would go above and beyond for. Taught us a lot through that journey. My sincere condolences to the family.

In the years that we worked with Dan which were many, he was always the yardstick that others were measured by! Time after time without malice or self absorbance, he achieve the goals that made our agency great!

Ann, please accept my sympathy for Dan´s passing. I had worked with him at Vanderheyden Hall, many years ago. Most recently we worked in the same bureau at OCFS. He was always advocating for the kids.
I know he will be missed by you and the rest of family. Take care and be kind to yourself. Grieving is hard work and I hope the beautiful and funny memories you have will help you as the time goes by. God Bless, Helen Blanchette

Dan Maxwell possessed a remarkable ability to lead while simultaneously nurturing leadership in everyone he encountered. He had a gift for recognizing the strengths in others before they even realized them themselves. I am deeply indebted to Dan embracing reforms and spearheading change on behalf of the youth and families we served at the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

I spent countless hours with Dan and during that time, I learned so much about his deep love for his family and the admiration he held for them. His dedication to both his work and his loved inspired me.
