To the Hahn family, please accept my deepest condolences on Dave's passing.
Dave and I were partners in crime in the late 1960's through the turbulent 70's.
Back then I tried to interest my friends in the enjoyments of being out in nature, but Dave was the only one who took a liking to the outdoors. That set the two of us on our way to find many interesting places. Dave had a competitive spirit and was a bit of a thrill seeker. He could take a walk in the woods and turn it into an adventure, and we shared many. Our first hike was the Thacher Park lower trail in winter, making a perilous crawl down to the massive ice dome at the base of the waterfall. That got Dave hooked and for a number of years after that we scrambled all over the Catskill Mountains. We tried to conquer each mountain twice. Once in fair weather and again in winter, reaching summits in some of the best and worst of conditions. Places like North Point, Windham High Peak, Twin Mountain, Slide, Kaaterskill, the Catskill Escarpment, and to the north we climbed Chimney Mountain. Whenever a trail became vague, Dave would apply his woodsman like skills to determine the direction we needed to travel, then we always went the opposite way... Dave knew up from down but compass headings eluded him, and he didn't care. It was just fun to be out in the wilds. I got Dave interested in trout fishing and that took us on countless adventures from the southern Catskills north to the heart of the Adirondacks. It was in the Adirondacks that Dave tried his hand at some serious backpacking and wilderness camping. With that competitive spirit, Dave would proclaim that today was the day he'd catch a bigger trout that I. With that the bets were made and and off we went to pound the waters for that trophy trout. Evenings we sat by the camp fire enjoying a meal of pan fried fish while I listened to Dave as he tried to renegotiate the bet. When you are young, there was always tomorrow. Those are the times I choose to recall when thoughts of Dave come to mind.
Respectfully, Larry Snyder.
