Dr. "Doc" Schmalberger was an inspiring Professor, who taught my classmates and I to start thinking like Physicists. His impact goes beyond his students, to the students of his students (and beyond). When people ask me how I got into Physics, I always say: "Well, I was truly blessed to have a GREAT first teacher, who showed us how interesting it could be!"
We will miss you Doc.
We send our condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Schmalberger.

Doc Schmalberger's astronomy class at the Boy's Academy was one o the first we attended (Girl's Academy class of '79). He was one of the most beloved teachers I ever had - even if one semester only - and at the end of the course we sang "To Sir With Love" to him. He just smiled and was so touched. What a lovely fellow.

Doc was a great homeroom teacher and advisor. Loved his stories of traveling the edge of the stratosphere with NASA.
