Edgar Schick Obituary

Schick, Edgar C. Jr. M.D. CARLISLE, Mass. Edgar C. Schick Jr., M.D., of Carlisle, Mass., passed away peacefully in his home, in the presence of family, on July 2, 2022, at the age of 78, after a brief illness. Born in 1944, in Albany, the eldest child of Edgar and Elizabeth (Coogan) Schick, "Ed" was raised in the nearby community of Delmar. A 1962 graduate of Vincentian High School in Albany, Ed attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., receiving his bachelor's degree in 1966, and the Cornell University Medical College in New York, N.Y., receiving his medical doctorate in 1970. A member of the national medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha, Ed was recognized by his medical school classmates with The Good Physician Award in 1970. Following two years of service with the U.S. Air Force in Altus, Okla., Ed practiced medicine, specializing in cardiology, at University Hospital in Boston from 1975 to 1986; the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., from 1986 to 1989, where he served as acting chief of cardiology from 1988 to 1989; and the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., from 1989, until his retirement in 2012, where he served as director of echocardiography. Throughout his medical career, Ed served as a teacher and trainer to medical students at hospitals and medical schools alike, and received the Excellence in Teaching Award at Lahey Clinic in 2002. He was a member of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, and the Massachusetts Medical Society. In the words of a colleague, he helped thousands of people through his work as a cardiologist, and helped many of his colleagues care for thousands of their patients. For anyone who got to know him, Ed's initially quiet veneer soon gave way to a font of knowledge and passion for the sciences, literature, poetry, music, art, and sports. Capable of causing a room to erupt in laughter and eye rolling simultaneously, Ed was known for his puns, or "D" humor as fondly referred to by his children. How much did he love puns? More than obit. An avid singer and forever student of music, he was a member of his college glee club and sang in many choirs and chorale groups alongside his wife, including, most recently, as a tenor with the Masterworks Chorale. In public life, he was a model of professionalism, industriousness, generosity, and decency. In private life, he was deeply caring, delightfully silly, and never (well, rarely) without his sense of humor. His was a life well-lived, and his family will remember him mixing drinks for pre-dinner "party time," reading the New England Journal of Medicine at his desk with the Red Sox game on the radio in the background, making pancakes, playing catch, doing yardwork, sending countless birthday and holiday cards with notes in his impeccable handwriting, shaking with silent laughter in his patterned maroon rocking chair, and myriad other ways. Ed was profoundly impacted by the loss of his wife of 45 years, Constance (Gosselin) Schick, in 2015. He is survived by his three children, Stefan Schick and his wife, Aielleen Fajardo of Queens, Matthew Schick and his partner, Lauren McCune of Portland, Ore., and Adriana Schick and her husband, Gary Collins of Natick, Mass.; his sister, Margaret Mary Schick of Midlothian, Va.; and grandchildren, Theo, Eloise, Ramona, Senan, and Danú, who surrounded him with laughter and love in his final weeks. Family and friends are invited to gather for visiting hours on Tuesday, July 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford St., Concord, Mass. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Irene Parish, 181 East Street, Carlisle, Mass. Burial will follow in the Green Cemetery in Carlisle. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders. "No, am not Sir Osler, nor was meant to be, Am an attendant physician, One that will do to swell a progress note, Start a workup or two. Advise the chief, no doubt an easy tool, Deferential, glad to be of use, Cautious, politic, meticulous, Full of high sentence but a bit obtuse, At times, indeed, almost ridiculous, Almost, at times, the fool." - Adapted from T.S. Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. For his online guestbook, please visit www.DeeFuneralHome.com.

I had the pleasure of working with Ed at Boston University Hospital. He was smart and caring. The patients loved him. I will always remember his great sense of humor and smile. He was an asset to cardiology and I am sure will be missed by many. Very sorry for your loss.
