Edith Place Obituary

Place, Edith M. COHOES Edith M. VanTassell Place, 84, of Cohoes, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 19, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy with family members at her side after a long illness. Born September 30, 1923 in Cooks-burg, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Ruth Hulbert Van Tassell and beloved wife of 62 years to William P. Place of Cohoes. Edith lived in the Capital District area. She was educated by her mother in a one-room school house and graduated from Middlebury Central High School at the age of 16. She was employed as a lathe operator for General Electric in Schenectady and, prior to that, she was a dental receptionist in East Durham. Edith was a kind, considerate and thoughtful person where everyone else came first. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a smart woman who loved her games. She had a passion for crossword puzzles and game shows where her mind was challenged. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the Shenandoah Valley of Va. Edith was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church in Cohoes. In addition to her husband; she is survived by her loving children, Kathleen Alvarez and friend Don Bernhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio, William J. Place and wife Sandra of Holden, Mass., Terrence M. Place of Schenectady, Kevin J. Place and wife Yvonne of Latham and Timothy J. Place and wife Joy of Alpharetta, Ga.; 10 cherished grandchildren, five adored great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard VanTassell. Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ltd., 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes Monday morning at 8:30; Mass of Christian Burial from St. Bernard's Church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford, N.Y. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4-8 p.m. Those wishing to remember Edith may make contributions in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Upstate NY/VT Chapter, 6 Automation Ln., Albany, NY 12205
