Edward Ryan Obituary

Ryan, Col. Edward Thomas
ALBANY - Col. Edward Thomas Ryan, Ret., who lived at Executive House Apartments, 175 South Swan Street, Albany, N.Y. has died. Till his recent move, he was a lifelong resident of the City of Rensselaer. He was a brother to Rosemary, Cornelius, Joan, Bernadette and Joseph Ryan. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, Linda Sargent, Dennis Williams, Theresa Beach, George Williams, Warren Williams, Sharon Ryan, Kelly Blue, Joseph Ryan, Mary Jane Brozowski, Judith Leto, Daniel Dominski, Michael Dominski, Cathy Stammel, and Cornelius Ryan. He was a member of St. John's Church, Rensselaer. He was a retired Fireman in the City of Rensselaer. He was one of the owners and founders of radio station WHRL-FM, Albany, N.Y. Also, among his many talents, Mr. Ryan was a Chef at the East Greenbush, American Legion Post #1231.
Mr. Ryan had a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from North American University and a Bachelor of Science degree from SCU. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He was a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Past N.Y.S. Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans/Agent Orange Committee for the American Legion, a Past commander of Melvin Roads POST 1231, American Legion in East Greenbush, N.Y., Life member and Past Grand Knight of Rensselaer Knights of Columbus, and member of the BPOE and the Veterans of Foreign Wars POST# 7378, both in East Greenbush, N.Y. He was a retired Colonel with the 10th Brigade, located on South Lake Ave, N.Y.C.
A few of Colonel Ryan's awards, decorations and commendations include: The National Defense Service Medal, Defense of Liberty Medal "For participation to the State following the attack on America, 11 September 2001". He also received a citation by the direction of the Governor of the State of New York, and "The Conspicuous Service Medal" the citation reads in part, "Col Ryan's Loyalty, Diligence and Devotion to Duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and a long and distinguished Military career which reflect great credit upon himself and the State of New York." From the division of Military and Naval affairs, he received the "Commanders Citation" for "Service Above and Beyond the Call...."
As to his wishes, Mr. Ryan was enrolled in the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. After their task is completed, his body will be cremated, and his ashes returned.
To the Family for Interment, He will be buried in Kinderhook, N.Y. The funeral will be private for Family only with no Memorial Services of any kind.
Edward wanted to share the following: "I must tell you one more thing. I was Gay all my life: thru grade school, thru High School, thru College, thru Life. I was in a loving and caring relationship with Paul Cavagnaro of North Greenbush. He was the love of my life. We had 25 great years together. Paul died in 1994 from a medical Procedure gone wrong. I'll be buried next to Paul. I'm sorry for not having the courage to come out as Gay. I was afraid of being ostracized: by Family, Friends, and Co-Workers. Seeing how people like me were treated, I just could not do it. Now that my secret is known, I'll forever Rest in Peace."
"Uncle Ed" and family would like to thank the following for their kind, courteous, and professional manner: Albany Medical College, Altamont Home Delivered Meals, VA hospital staff, Landmark Health Care and the Albany Fire Department.

We would like give a special thank you to The Community Hospice. They were there for everything and were our backbone throughout it all.

I don't know Col. Ryan or his family personally. I was made aware of his passing via imgr.com, specifically through a post made by a user there, during Pride Month 2025. I'm sad he had to live his life in secret, but elated he had a wonderful partner through it all. To Col. Ryan, thank you for your many services. We will celebrate this Pride and many to come in your honor as well as for the many who cannot celebrate themselves. To his family, it sounds like he was truly loved by you. May you find peace in his passing.

I´m a Dutch man and although from a country where one by law and general opinion can `come out´ within my country and definitely in most of the world people are judged and persecuted for their love preference. Ed was obviously a courageous man with an enormous sense of responsibility. Yet was rightfully afraid to be scrutinised for nothing. I feel so bad for him and hundreds of millions others in the same position. That´s why we keep fighting with Pride. We must.

Hail to such a courageous man. He has been overwhelmed by people's reactions to his "coming out at death". Such a valient statement and revelation of truth. He has set an example for eternity. He has set a standard for so many human beings. My love to Edward and Paul, together in peace, finally

Blessings to your soul and spirit, Mr. Ryan, and thank you so much for your service in so many ways. God made you as you were supposed to be. (It took me many years to figure that out, but He also blessed me with a wonderful male lifetime partner.) I know God is happy that you and Paul are together again.

I do not know this man but certainly have the utmost respect for him, and want to thank him for his service. This is so sad and a rotten commentary on our society that a man who has given so much time to serve and protect others, feels he must live a lie to protect himself and continue to be allowed to protect others. So glad in spite of him feeling he has to live his life as one big lie he found somebody to love and be loved back. So sorry for your loss.

Colonel Ryan, I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to live a whole life without the opportunity to truly live love in freedom, without fear of hatred or ostracism from others. The loss of your beloved Paul Cavagnaro was surely a low blow, and it pains me greatly to imagine what it must have been like to live that mourning in silence.

Your secret is no longer a secret, Colonel. Wherever you are, I hope you have found the peace you longed for and dance eternally with Paul. If you were born again, you would surely be able to love freely.

Mr. Edward, thank you for your service. Your story will always stick with me, as a young queer adult. You deserved to be able to live openly, and I´m so sorry the world failed to make it safe for you to do so. I hope other queer people feel the way I do after reading this; feel that we must keep working hard to make sure nobody has to keep their identity secret their whole life.
Thank you to Mr. Edward´s family for respecting his wishes to share his identity, many other families wouldn´t have done the same.
May Edward and Paul be up in the sky, free to love openly, painting the sky with colors of love and pride, dancing in the clouds.

The military service that you and all men, women, and non-binary like you provided to America allowed and allows the LGBTQ community to live in a society and proudly, discretely, or however the heck wanted, live its truth-while at the same time forsaking yours. Blessings that you found love and companionship, and may you rest in eternal peace knowing the world knows who you truly were and what you represented-the best of men, the most normal and basic of human beings. May the military catch up to your deathbed enlightenment-in spirit. In deed, it´s already been forced to. Godspeed.

To the family and friends left behind, my deepest sympathies. To Col. Ryan, thank you for bravery in sharing your authentic self. It is never too late. June 16, 2024

I hope that you are now with Paul after 30 years of being unable to grieve his loss publicly or with you family, may you two rejoice in being one for eternity. I am sorry that humanity has failed you, Paul, and so many others. Thank you for coming out in your goodbye; Your final statement to the world serves as a powerful message. If someone so strong and brave as yourself could not muster the courage to be openly gay in this world, then we as a collective are failing each other monstrously. Even the bravest and strongest of us all need much more kindness in the world, that balance would strengthen us all.

I wish peace and joy for you and Paul in your eternal journeys, and I hope your love is lighting up the sky.

Thank you for your dedicated service, and thank Paul for standing by you until his mortal end.

Sir, I think of you and all others who served under DADT every single day. I have never taken it for granted for a second of my own military service that I can do so as an out lesbian. I recently encountered a 20 year old airman who had never heard of DADT and was puzzled by the concept. It was bittersweet. It's a blessing that this generation can't even imagine those horrors but at the same time I never want you to be forgotten. Thank you for your service.

And What a splash you made this pride month... I shared this on my Facebook page as you shared the same obituary column as my uncle. My eyes welled up reading it, but your story needed to be shared. And now it has been shared all over the country. I am proud of you. You needed to hear that.
It is unfortunate that it took dying to be/show/share your true authentic self. May you rest in peace.
