Edwin Henry Rogers, of Ballston Lake, N.Y., age 88, passed away at home, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on November 5, 1936, in Newton, Mass., he was the eldest child of Eliot Francis Rogers and Lila Knight Rogers. He was a kind, loving, and selfless man with a wry sense of humor who strongly supported what he thought was right.
Upon graduating from Newton High School in 1954, Ed was awarded a George Westinghouse scholarship and went on to study physics at Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon University). At Carnegie Tech, he was the editor of the school newspaper, The Tartan, a member of the Army ROTC, and a member Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Ed received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1962.
Dr. Rogers was a dedicated professor of mathematics and computer science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for more than 36 years. A lifelong love of travel led Ed and his wife, Joan, to all parts of the world and on many sailing adventures.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Joan; children, Andrew (Michelle), Anne, and Margo (Bryant); and six grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy, Lauren, Gabriella, Tayler, Grace, Zachary and Audrey. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Gudmundson of East Falmouth, Mass., and many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and sister, Gail R. Smith.
Services will be held privately.
