I was sorry to learn of the passing of Professor Hoffmann. I took his course entitled Soviet Politics at SUNY Albany in the mid-1970's. He was a brilliant teacher who inspired me to pursue excellence in my studies and career.

I was sorry to see him retire, and sorry to learn that he is gone. His education and professional development unfolded during the harsh realities of the cold war days. I was always bemused by the contrast between his topic of study and his gentle demeanor. His passing comes as a new and acrimonious era opens between Russia and the west. His expertise will be missed. His passing was a loss for all of us.

My heart goes out to Erik's wife and family. I met him in 1994 when I was hired at Rockefeller College and he was welcoming and a true gentleman. He was a supportive colleague, honest, and had a great sense of humor. I'm very sorry for your loss and may he rest in peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Erik when I started working at Rockefeller College over 20 years ago. I remember his kindness and warmth and I always enjoyed chatting with him. My heart goes out to you.

Erik was such a kind and thoughtful colleague. His students appreciated his gentle guidance so much. He was a wise presence in our department meetings, and I so appreciated how welcome he made me feel when I started my position at UAlbany in 2006. He will be greatly missed and we will remember his kindness.

I had Professor Hoffmann as a grad student in the 1970's. He also served as my advisor and was on my dissertation committee. We also played tennis on occasion. He was a mentor and friend.
My favorite courses in grad school were with Erik. I shared his fascination with Soviet politics. He had a remarkably acute intelligence as well as a voluminous knowledge of the subject matter. Professor Hoffmann was a superior researcher and educator.
But more importantly, he was an extremely warm and generous man and so well liked and respected by those who knew him.
My deepest sympathies to his family.
