Ernest Jacobson Obituary

Jacobson, Ernest VOORHEESVILLE Ernest "Ernie" Jacobson, 92, beloved husband of Sylvia Jacobson, passed from this earth at his home on May 11, 2012. He was surrounded and cared for by his loving family during the past several years prior to his death. Ernie was a lifelong resident of Voorheesville and son of the late Howard and Laura Jacobson (Cook). He is predeceased by his brother, Howard Jacobson Jr. of Guilderland; and his sisters, Edna Van der Veer of New Salem and Margarete Miller of Selkirk. Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Sylvia "Sandy" Jacobson; his daughters, Carol Lynn Jacobson of Voorheesville, Nancy Ann Tatko of Willimantic, Maine and Joyce Marie Jacobson of Glen Mills, Pa., who he nicknamed "Moon," "Half-Moon" and "Peanut" respectively; his grandson, Steven Andrew Tatko of Willimantic; and many nieces and nephews. Ernie graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1936 at the age of 16 where he lettered in baseball. He went to work at Duffy-Mott Cider Mill in Voorheesville, then was employed by International Harvester for many years and retired from the Golub Corporation in 1985. Ernie was a life member of the Empire Beagle Club and bred and trained American Kennel Club beagles throughout his life. He spent more than 80 years rooting for the Boston Red Sox and nearly 60 years as an avid Siena Saints basketball fan. He played softball as a member of the Voorheesville "Wildcats" and was an avid reader of baseball, mystery and animal-related books. Ernie's greatest joy was spending time with his wife and daughters gardening, attending sporting events and beagle field trials, as well as long drives in the country to pick fruit and buy vegetables from local farmers. He loved his wife's homemade pies and jam made from their outings and was a regular customer of Gene's Fish Fry in East Greenbush and Dutcher's Ice Cream in Altamont. Ernie purposefully lived a simple, well-balanced life centered on his family and love of nature. He will be remembered for sharing this legacy along with his quiet strength, wit and wisdom - and will be missed dearly. A private service and funeral will be held at the request of the family. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to the Guilderland Animal Shelter, 6363 Frenchs Mill Road, Altamont, NY 12009 or Albany Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. Ma, Carol, Joyce, Nancy, John and Steven, so sorry to hear of Pa's passing. He was a great man and I have so many fond memories of him from my childhood. I remember playing wiffle ball in the backyard, the walks in the fields and gardens, seeing the beagle puppies being born under the heat lamps and all the Siena games we used to all go together! He was one of kind and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
