Barrow, Evelyn GUILDERLAND Evelyn Jacobs Barrow, age 88, of the Atria Guilderland, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in the Bronx, she was the daughter of the late Hyman and Beatrice (Zweigbaum) Jacobs. She graduated from Evander Childs High School where she participated in the service league, dance club and French club. During World War II, Evelyn worked in the Empire State Building for the office of price administration assisting with war rationing efforts. She met David Barrow before the war and married in 1945, later moving to Valley Stream, Long Island where she raised her family. Evelyn had been employed as a bookkeeper and enjoyed playing mah jong and was a volunteer at her children's school in Valley Stream. She was a faithful congregant of Temple Gates of Zion and, after moving to Albany in 1983, she joined Temple Israel. Evelyn was a 20-year resident of the Towers of Colonie, enjoyed traveling with the Silver Streakers Group, was active in community groups such as Hadassah where she was a lifetime member. While residing at Atria Guilderland, she established many new friendships and enjoyed her longtime friendship with Bea Colker. Evelyn attended weekly services at the Atria with Rabbi Moshe Bomzer. Evelyn was predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years, David Barrow; her brothers, Murray and Leonard Jacobs; her sister, Sarah Jacobs; and by her cherished son Arthur. She is the devoted mother of Judy (Michael) Thorpe and doting nana of Danielle Thorpe and Stacy Barrow. Evelyn is also survived by her sister-in-law, Miriam Lewis as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to call at the chapel commencing at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Interment will be held on Thursday in the Beth Moses Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Evelyn in a special way may make a memorial contribution to either Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205 or Temple Israel, 600 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, NY 12208. The period of mourning will be observed at the home of Judy and Michael Thorpe in Guilderland, N.Y. on Saturday evening, December 15 commencing at 7:00.
