AVERILL PARK - Frederick John Schafer, 81, died Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center, after a long illness.
Born in Hattiesburg, Miss., he was son of the late Frederick Schafer and Eleanor Connors Schafer; and husband of Ruth Ellen Portz Schafer. He had resided in Sand Lake for 50 years.
Fred was a sales manager for Genesee Brewing Company for 11 years, and a truck driver for the United States Postal Service general mail facility for 22 years, retiring in 2008.
He was a communicant of St. Henry's Church. A Vietnam Veteran, Fred was very proud of his time in the Marine Corps, and held dear to his heart his time spent stationed in Okinawa.
Having experience building furniture, a big book titled "carpentry," and a group of dedicated friends, Fred built his dream house for his family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his two daughters, Amy (Steven) Schafer-Smith, Sand Lake and Alison (Jason) Fraley, Rotterdam; his grandchildren, Austin Smith and Schafer Fraley; his siblings, Carolyn (Fred) Bestle, Wynantskill, Janice Dewey, Cohoes, Janet Lasky and Karl (Stacy) Schafer, Sand Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call at St. Henry's Church, 39 Old Route 66, Averill Park, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m.
