BURLINGTON, Vt. - Harriet Rifkin, a remarkable woman, passed away, on March 19, 2025, at the age of 84. Born in New Castle, Pa., she spent most of her youth in Cleveland, Ohio, before relocating to Rochester and Albany, N.Y. She recently relocated to Burlington, Vt., where she resided near her son, Avery. Her two sons, Avery and Carl Rifkin, were her sole survivors, as was her brother, Barry Smith. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Eric Peterson, whose family warmly embraced Harriet as an integral member of their own.
Harriet attended Ohio State and received her degree from Rochester University.
Harriet's unwavering love and admiration were cherished by every member of her family. She was an exceptional aunt. Her former husband, Barry Rifkin, holds her in the highest regard. Her dear friend, Teena Behr, fondly remembers their long and meaningful daily conversations, and the good times they shared at Coburg Village.
Harriet's commitment to community service was unwavering throughout her life.
In Rochester, she held various positions, including bank manager, tutoring Hebrew, and running for state office. In Albany, she actively participated in establishing an organization for professional women. During her time in Coburg Village, she served on numerous committees; she particularly cherished her role on the welcoming committee. Harriet's warm demeanor and genuine interest in others were evident in her interactions, as she often sought to gauge their well-being or simply offered a friendly greeting and a comforting embrace.
Throughout her life, Harriet maintained a strong connection to the Jewish community.
Harriet was always available to provide emotional support to her family and friends. Regardless of her own circumstances, she drew upon her remarkable resilience to assist her husband, sons, brother, family, and friends.
Harriet Rifkin, a Resilient Woman, lived a full and giving life. She will not be forgotten.
