Howie had all the wonderful characteristics this world needs- family and friendship values, compassion, dedication, intelligence, as well as the impeccable strength in loyalty. One of the finest of human beings. He is missed by so many.

I graduated from East Meadow High School with Howie who I knew as "Smitty". He was such a kind and gentle fellow. I can't say we were close friends, as we ran in different social circles, but he was a delight to chat with, always a smile on his face. I am heartbroken tonight to learn this sad news, and I wish his family members my deepest and most heartfelt condolences. He made the world a better place just by his presence, and to learn that he eventually became a doctor whose specialty was assisting patients in minimizing their pain doesn't surprise me in the least. Howie, I miss you dearly. If you can see this, remember this B-Mitzvah night? What a blast. Due to a terminal illness, I will be joining you soon. Sad as that is, may I have the next dance with you? The thought of hugging you once again brings tears of joy to me. xoxo

We just recently heard about Howard and are so very sorry for the family's loss. He was one of the gentlest men I've ever known and always had a smile when I'd see him at Beth Emeth. Joan, my heart goes out to you and the kids especially Alyssa and Josh who I grew to know so well during their years in Youth Group.

I just heard the very sad news. I was a friend of Howie's in college many years ago, and many of my very best memories have him somewhere in the picture! I have enjoyed seeing the family grow over the years from the holiday pictures. I hope it's comforting to know how many lives he touched.

We always knew you were a kind, intelligent, compassionate, loving individual, but we never realized what a great impact you had on so many people. You touched so many lives. You truly left your mark on this world. We never thought we would have to say goodbye so soon and we're having a hard time dealing with this. If only we had more time to spend together and more time to tell you how much we loved you. We could only hope you knew the love we had and always will have for you. You will never be forgotten. You will always be in our hearts and thoughts. Goodbye to our favorite cousin.

I was very saddened to hear of Howie's passing. He has been my mentor since I was a fellow in pain management at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston. Howie had an incredible wealth of knowledge and was a prolific author in the field of pain medicine. I was lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to work with him and serve as a co-author with him on several projects. Despite his passing, Howie's contributions to the field of pain medicine will continue to positively impact patients for years to come. I can only aspire to leave a legacy like Howie's at the end of my career. Please accept my deepest sympathies at his loss.

May we offer our heartfelt condolences to Howard's family.
To have known him was a pleasure and to have worked with him an inspiration. Despite the fact that meeting Howard was all too infrequent, time in his company was memorable.
Our association with him was through our shared profession. Howard's contribution to that profession was immense and deserved more recognition. He was prodigious in his academic work: we shared authorship of several books and Howard was kind enough to invite me to contribute to some of his other works. That said, those works were largely Howard's with my name appended! His vast array of publications has contributed an enormously to pain medicine and without doubt helped countless numbers of patients receive better treatment by those who read Howard's work. On behalf of those patients may I say "thank you".

To know cousin Howie was to love and adore him. He was the best cousin anyone could ask for. Howie made it look so easy and was so unassuming, that we can only now appreciate that wherever he was, from L.I. to Albany to China he was always the kindest, warmest, loving, funniest and definitely the smartest one in the room. We know of nobody else for which that could be said. We were blessed to have him in our lives although, for too short a period of time. We will miss him every day but carry him in our hearts forever. Love always and forever, Jill and Elliot

I want to convey my most heartfelt condolences to Doctor Smith's family, friends, & colleagues. In addition to him being a dedicated and compassionate physician, he was a wonderfully warm & kind man. He always went far above & beyond the call of duty to make the extra time in his busy schedule to see me, check up on me, & schedule me in (anywhere he possibly could!) for treatment. He was always genuinely concerned for my ongoing health & well-being. A wonderful doctor & an exceptional man. He will be sorely missed by all & I will always remember him fondly.

I too was fortunate enough to have met and worked with him. Even though I worked with the kids and not his part of the hopsital at all, he found me (I used to joked that he hunted me down). He wanted my expertise in pediatric pain management. I may not have believed myself an expert but he pushed me to be more and better than I was. It was always so obvious how much he cared not just for his family but every patient he met. If you were to have one memory of him, it would be his smile and his jovial way of going through life. May all of us remember how he lived: live life to it's fullest because you never know how much more you have.

Dear Joan & family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I feel privileged to have worked for your husband, and father, for the last ten years. Always respectful, patient, and generous with his time whether collaborating with him about a patient or picking his brain about a medical concern with one of our own family members. I am so grateful to have worked for someone who was able to make everyone around him feel equally important, no matter your title or job duties. Someone who had such a great sense of humor and that laugh that will be missed by so many I'm sure. While I recognize the importance of his professional accomplishments in helping to advance the areas of chronic pain and addiction medicine, personally, I will mourn him for the human being and friend who simply made going to work each day a little more fun. I read this quote once: When you die people may not remember what you said or did but they will always remember how you made them feel. Thank you Howie - knowing you was a gift.

Howie was simply the most amazing person I've ever known. More amazing than most of you even know. Did you know he was a champion wrestler--trained with the US Olympic team in greco roman wrestling, qualified to wrestle for the US at the Pan Am games--probably not--because he never bragged. Did you know he was a classical guitarist? probably not--unless you had the good fortune to hear him play, able to reproduce songs that he's heard only once. In college he was a Math genius, he was allowed to use the electron microscope in Albany as a sophomore--the rest of us didn't even know how to get into the room.
He was the self proclaimed President of the Comedy club and a life long friend to all who knew him. He was board certified in 3 specialties. In college he passed the multiple tests to qualify as an Actuary. You would never know a lot about him, because he would never tell you. He was a quiet, kind, and loyal friend for the past 38 years. He dedicated his professional life to alleviating pain and suffering--as a friend he did the same for all of us. He was the world's greatest listener and sounding board. He LOVED his children they made him so happy, and so proud--he lived for them. The world is less funny, less creative, much less intelligent, and less caring now that he has left us so soon. He'll be so very deeply missed by those of us who were so privileged to have him as our friend
