James Corbett Obituary

Corbett, James J. Sr. GLENMONT James J. Corbett Sr., 68, entered eternal life on Monday, May 17, 2021. Born in Albany, he was the son of Alice Smith Corbett and the late John Corbett. Jim retired as the detective supervisor for the Bethlehem Police Department where he had a long career. He went on to work in the Attorney General's office, the Office of Medicaid Inspector General, and Albany Medical Center Hospital. Although he enjoyed ice racing, working in his garage, brewing beer, smoking meats and driving his tractor, his greatest joys revolved around his wife, children, grandchildren, other family members and friends. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Eileen M. Burke Corbett; dear father of Elizabeth M. Tompkins and James J. Corbett II (Maura); cherished grandfather of Bentley Carusone and Maureen Tompkins; son-in-law of the late Chief Thomas H. Burke and Elizabeth Burke; and brother of Richard Corbett (Debbie), Michael Corbett, Jean Zaccagnino (Jack) and the late William Corbett (Lynn) and John Corbett. He is also survived by his loving granddog Tipperary, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jim's family on Friday, May 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. Please only enter the funeral home from the parking lot entrance; masks and social distancing are expected; and 45 visitors at any time will be allowed. Funeral services on Saturday, May 22, at 9:30 a.m. in the Historic Church of St. Mary on Capital Hill, Albany, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held in the Calvary Cemetery immediately following the funeral Mass. Those wishing to remember James J. Corbett Sr. in a special way may send a contribution to the Bernard and Millie Duker Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY, 12208. Eileen, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of John. I remember him working at AMC and always busting my chops, but he was also like a big brother and always gave advice. He was a privilege to know and see everyday. Sincerely, Mari

Though our paths crossed less frequently over the years than in the long-ago past, it was always a pleasure to be in Jimmy´s company.
In the early and mid `70s Jimmy and I not only shared apartments (and worked on developing our cooking skills, from which we survived with no lasting ill effects) first on Glenmont Court, then in Westville, but spent innumerable hours enjoying cars; there were local sports car events as well as races at places like Lime Rock Park and Thompson (Connecticut), Bryar (New Hampshire) and Bridgehampton (Long Island). I couldn´t begin to tally the hours we spent building Volkswagen-powered mini-modifieds at Bob Hackel´s shop in Colonie, and all those unforgettable Saturday nights at Lebanon Valley. Jimmy was on the scene when Bob and the #97 won the biggest annual mini-stock race at Pocono. I´ve even got a few fuzzy recollections when we weren´t in a garage somewhere but passing an epically sociable evening at Private Bennie´s, or maybe the Mad Hatter.
Regardless of when we last saw each other, it was always reassuring to know Jimmy was there and always had the time and the temperment to help a friend in whatever way was needed.
My memories of those halcyon days are indelible, and Jimmy will always be a part of them. Godspeed, old friend.
