James Fisk Obituary

Fisk, James D. BURNT HILLS James Donald Fisk, Burnt Hills, known to Capital District baby-boomers as "Uncle Jim Fisk", host of the Freihofer BreadTime Stories television show and to regional travelers as the patriarch of JIMAPCO Maps, passed away at the Ellis Center January 8, 2011 following a short illness. Born in Glens Falls, N.Y., in 1919, he was the son of David Simpson Fisk and Grace Gibson Fisk. He attended Hudson Falls schools, and then attended Antioch College, and Yale University, studying math and theatrical set design. His graduate education was interrupted by World War II, where he served as an officer in the US Army's 96th AA Regiment, and later in the newly formed 7th Army, touring the Pacific, European, and African theaters. He married Jane Gitsham in 1942 while on a short military leave. He returned home to Hudson Falls in 1945. Jim went to work at WRGB in Schenectady in 1945 as a staff artist. In July 1956, he was named the new host of the children's show, Freihofer's BreadTime Stories, famous for the young audience who were invited to create "squiggles", which Uncle Jim would finish into artworks. Jim's next career was already well underway in the form of JIMAPCO, "Maps to swear by, not at!" His first map, which started out as a hobby, was of Burnt Hills, the community he'd call home for 50 years. The map was created to help organize a church canvassing project, and its progression to a retail map product was just a fluke - a fluke that turned into a viable and enduring business. Jim retired from JIMPACO in 1991 although he remained active as a designer for JIMAPCO well into his 80s. Throughout his life, Jim participated in a broad variety of community projects and services, including the Burnt Hills Ambulance Squad, the Burnt Hills Library Board, the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, and various school and charitable endeavors. Jim Fisk was predeceased in 1981 by his first wife, Jane Gitsham Fisk. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Lou Fisk; his sister, Grace Elizabeth Giddings; his four children, David (Christina), Thomas (Margaret), Barbara (Gregory) Gachowski, Sarah (Kevin) West; stepdaughter Margo Ryerson; six grandchildren, Stacy Mendrick and Michael Fisk, Jamie Gachowski and Stephanie Hample, Erika and Connor West; three step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 73 Midline Rd., Ballston Lake, N.Y. on January 22 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Make a Wish Foundation, the Adirondack Lyme Disease Foundation, your local animal shelter, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home.

I too was saddened by "Uncle" Jim's passing. Being one of the baby boomers my day was not complete until the end of the Freddie Freihofer show. He was one of the comfort experiences of my childhood, a good safe wholesome guy that made you laugh and amazed you with his humor. We had a Freihofer horse drawn wagon stop everyday and each time the wagon stopped I was waiting to see "Uncle" Jim.
I am one of Jimapco's vendors and I am always proud to tell the story of Jim and Jimapco to my other customers. We all should be proud of JIm Fisk, his legacy and for his creation of Jimapco. Without Jim we all would be lost in one way or another.

I was deeply saddened to read of "Uncle" Jim's passing. I don't think there was a kid in the Capital District in the late 1950 and early 60's that met him a least once while celebrating their birthdays on TV. My chance came in my 7th birthday in 1959 and I still remember him as a charming and gracious person. The group photo of that day is still in my family album. If they could only bring back that gentle and creative genre of children's entertainment today!

I still remember the birthday parties my brother and I had on the Freddie Freihofer show, and my family belonged to the same church in Burnt Hills. When I learned to drive my parents gave me my own JIMAPCO map of the area. He impacted so many lives in a very positive way! My deepest condolences to his family.

My father was Casimer Latkowski. He and Jim and a bunch of other guys got together every year for a sailing trip to Mystic. My father looked forward to that. We called Jim, 'Uncle Jim'. My father passed on March 19, 2010. They will meet again and chat about old times. Bless his soul.

One of my favorite memories is also of a squiggle. I remember not wanting to wait in the waiting room at the dentist. So we went into the hallway, slid our backs down the wall and pulled our knees up to sit on the floor. Out of his pocket came his trusty little notebook and pencil. Silently, he handed them to me. I quickly drew a line and handed it back. He made it into a dog eating a bone. The page flipped. He drew a line. I remember making it into a tree. We kept this up until the woman came out to get me. It was the best dentist visit ever. Thank you everyone for your kind words about my grandfather.

Uncle Jim Fisk was a part of the childhood of most of us born and raised in the Capital District. He was a gentle, jolly host who probably fostered an early interest in art in a lot of us. We thank him for his gift and for all the memories of all those 'squiggles'. God bless him and his family...he brought us joy.

I watched Uncle Jim and longed to be on the show. Later, I used many Jimapco maps. if you grew up in the Capitol District, he was a part of your life whether you knew it or not. I have a feeling he's in Heaven asking, "Who wants to squiggle?"

My sincere condolences to the entire family. Hold close the wonderful memories you have of your father, he was a wonderful, kind and compassionate man. I remember Mr. Monkey hanging at the bottom of the stairs and the artwork hanging a floor down. His talent, surrealist painting and gentle demeanor, from camp to home and on the West Wind will always be a part of me. Your Dad was always so kind, He spoke gently to me after my mother passed away. He told me she would always be there as long as I needed her and she still speaks to me sometimes when I sleep. I know no words can express what you feel, know he has touched the hearts of so many, and all will miss him. God bless you and you are in my prayers.

A GREAT MAN AND A LOST MEMORY FROM MY CHILDHOOD RIP UNCLE JIM .

January 11, 2011

Remembering 11 years ago when I mentioned to my then co-worker Kevin how much my husband wanted to be on the Freihofer show with “Uncle Jim” and never had the opportunity to. Next thing I know a BEAUTIFUL, personalized Squiggle was delivered to me. We had never met Uncle Jim in person but knew that he was a pretty special person to take the time and do something like this. We can only imagine how special he was to his family.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.
