James Gimondo Obituary

Gimondo, James A. Jr.
ALBANY - James A. Gimondo Jr. passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at his home in Albany, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Albany, he was the son of the late James (Giralamo) and Angelina Gimondo. Jim graduated from Philip Schuyler High School. He spent his entire working career with Rosch Brothers Construction Company where he made lifelong friends with the men that worked beside him. He loved partaking in sports like bowling (Playdium), handball (YMCA), and softball (where he was one of the original players in the inaugural season at the Charlie Young Park, which he helped build). He especially loved golf, where he spent many hours with friends on the Links in the Dubbers Golf League. Jim was a member of the West Albany Italian Benevolent Society for more than 30 years where he and his wife spent many happy times playing bocce and enjoying countless other celebrations at the Club.
Jimmy was happily married for 47 years and is survived by his loving wife, Josephine (Memmo Scipione) of Albany. He and his wife enjoyed their travels to Aruba and Puerto Rico and especially those dreamy nights dancing at the Golden Fox Restaurant. Jim married into an instant family, loving his stepdaughters as his own. Having never had the blessing of having his own children he embraced his role as father, then grandfather. He attended all of the grandchildren's sporting events and was their number one fan.
Jimmy was known in the family as "Mr. Fix-It" as he would often be called upon to repair, rebuild, invent, and downright fix anything. And the finished product was always better than new.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine; his stepdaughters and their spouses, Jo-Ann and Ken Strube, and Judith and Philip Smaldone; his grandchildren and their spouses, Josey and Ryan Lawson, Joseph and Ashley Strube, Franklin Strube and Cristina Shepherd, and Samantha Smaldone; his great-grandchildren, Beatrice and Leo Lawson, Freya Shephard-Strube, and Everett James Strube; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Joseph and Salvatore; his niece, Jeanne Gimondo; and his nephew, Danny Gimondo.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Carmen Giuliano and Community Hospice and their caring staff, and everyone who helped our family through this difficult time.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jimmy's family on Tuesday, February 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. His funeral service will follow at 1 p.m.
Those wishing to remember Jim in a special way may send a contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 2 Pine West Plaza, #202, Albany, NY, 12205.

Josephine, how saddened we were to read of Jimmys passing. He was certainly one of the nicest people you would want to know. He would always greet you with a smile and a hug. I will miss his friendship. Just about everyone from the softball team is now gone with the exception of Buddy Early. This is the price we pay for living so long. I hope God gives you and your family the strength to get through this most difficult time. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the service since we are in Florida. God bless you all.
